Managing behavior of those with Alzheimer’s/Dementia

Rayma Scalzo

We are so pleased to have Dr. Julia Lesselyong, Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Director of Behavioral Health, speak to our Alzheimer/Dementia Caregiver Discussion Group on Saturday, December 19 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The topic of her presentation will be Managing behavior of those having Alzheimer’s/Dementia disease.

Dr. Lesselyong’s clinical training and practice has been focused on the assessment and treatment of older adults with mental health needs and cognitive problems. She has completed her doctorate in Clinical Psychology and also an internship at the Institute of Aging in San Francisco. Additionally, she has been working in a clinical practice with older adults including neuropsychological assessment and treatment of mental disorders in older adults.

Our discussion group provides information, resources and comfort for those residents who are caregivers for loved ones who have Alzheimer’s or any type of dementia. They could live in the home, at a local care facility or out of state. Our meeting time is divided into two parts. The first hour is for the speaker presentation. The second hour is spent with members asking questions or sharing experiences. Everything said during the meeting is confidential.

We have another group, The Saturday Group, that provides respite care for those having Alzheimer/Dementia disease. It meets at the same time at a nearby location. This group allows the caregiver the opportunity and peace of mind to attend the discussion group. It is run by PebbleCreek volunteers who have experience in this field. They want to make this time away as comfortable and stress free as possible. If your loved one is unable to participate in such a group, they may be able to arrange for someone to come to your house during the two hour meeting. Please RSVP by Thursday, December 17 for this special group.

Monthly breakfast: The caregivers meet for breakfast on the first Saturday of each month at 9:00 a.m. This gives the caregivers an opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. Knowing others who are going through the same journey is very beneficial.
