Lifelong Learning at PebbleCreek

Keep on top of events with new LLL website and e-newsletter

This September LifeLong Learning at PebbleCreek is launching a new website that will provide continually updated information about our lectures, classes, trips and special programs. So be sure to watch for the announcement that http://lifelonglearningatpc.org is open for visitors!

No longer limited by the space available on the printed page, we will be able to provide in-depth information on every speaker and program, provide links to websites where you can find more information and update the site with new material as it becomes available.

A calendar on the site will enable you to see all the programs planned or just the Monday Morning Lectures, Premier Programs, trips and classes. You can print the calendar to put on your refrigerator door or send an email about an event to friends to see if they want to join you. Over the course of the year, we’ll be adding more features to the site to make participating in LifeLong Learning programs easier than ever.

Another great way to stay in touch is through our e-newsletter. It arrives each weekend during the season with all you need to know about the upcoming week’s events. We also announce any changes to the schedule and feature things to do in the community. To sign up just send your name and email address to [email protected].

Tickets for LLL premier lectures begin September 11

You’ve asked, “When can we buy tickets for the 2014–2015 special Premier Events listed in last month’s PebbleCreek Post?”

We heard and so we have scheduled many opportunities for you to purchase them.

Premier tickets will go on sale at the Eagle’s Nest kiosk beginning September 11 and continuing every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of September from 8:00 until 10 a.m.

Talk to your neighbors and friends. Then come to the kiosk to buy as many tickets for as many dates as you want. Or if you are on vacation or at your summer home, you can call or email Diane Jakobs, at 734-789-7746, [email protected] or Phyllis Minsuk at 623-537-7166, [email protected] to reserve tickets for when you return to PebbleCreek in the fall.

The eleventh season of LifeLong Learning at PebbleCreek begins next month with three programs that we expect will appeal to many residents.

October 17: Teddy Roosevelt: President, rancher and founder of our National Parks

Theodore Roosevelt was a larger than life man. A rancher, Rough Rider and father of six prior to becoming the President of the United States, he started as a frail young boy but built up his body and dedicated himself to the Vigorous Life.

On Friday, October 17, Teddy Roosevelt will come alive on the stage of the Renaissance Theatre as Joe Wiegand has been entertaining audiences nationwide with his reprisal of Theodore Roosevelt. In his one man show, Joe shares stories of adventure, laughter and inspiration. The show begins at 7:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door or at the Eagle’s Nest kiosk (see accompanying article for dates). For more information on Wiegand’s performance, see www.teddyrooseveltshow.com.

Two Monday Morning Lectures in October

Ever wonder why anyone would want to build a zoo?

On Monday, October 20, we’ll learn what motivated Mickey Olson to build the Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park that is just a few miles from PebbleCreek. The zoo, which celebrated its thirtieth anniversary earlier this year, is privately owned and has never received tax dollars to build or operate the facility.

Dr. Alexander White, who held the audience spellbound last season as he recounted his experiences as a Holocaust survivor, returns Monday, October 27 to tell the story of Pearl Minz. Minz and her family were neighbors of the Whites in Krosno, Poland. The family had gone to Eastern Poland when the Nazis invaded but were rounded up and sent deep into Northeastern Siberia.

White has translated the diary that she kept in Siberia and uses the story to teach about some of the lesser known aspects of the Holocaust.

All Monday Morning Lectures begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Renaissance Theatre. Tickets are $3 per person at the door.

LLL FAQs

Do I have to be a member of LLL to attend lectures and go on trips?

No, LifeLong Learning programs are available to all the residents of PebbleCreek. No need to register in advance or pay dues to join the organization. Just show up and purchase your ticket for Monday Morning Lectures and Premier Programs or register and pay for trips and classes. Look for specific information after October 1.

Can I bring my houseguests to lectures and trips?

Yes, of course. We’re happy to help you entertain your guests and show them another reason that PebbleCreek is a great place to live.

Where and when can I buy tickets to the 2014–2015 Premier Lectures?

We begin selling tickets for the 2014–2015 Premiers at the Eagle’s Nest kiosk on September 11. Look at the schedule of dates and times elsewhere in this issue of the PebbleCreek Post. We also sell tickets in the Renaissance Theatre lobby before all Monday Morning Lectures, starting October 20 at 10:00 a.m. with a lecture by Mickey Olson who founded the World Wildlife Zoo and Aquarium 30 years ago.

Do you ever sell out for the lectures?

Not usually, but we have sold out on some occasions. This year we expect some of the Premier Programs will, so if you really want to come to a lecture or attend a trip or class, be sure to register quickly and buy your tickets soon. As the population in PC grows, so do our audiences.

How much are the tickets for the Monday Morning Lectures?

Still only $3 per person. And we have a drawing for door prizes at each lecture. What a bargain!

How do I volunteer to work on the LLL team?

Call or email Phyllis Minsuk, co-chair of LifeLong Learning, and tell her what you are interested in doing. 623-537-7166, [email protected]. You’ll be happy you did.

Read the Post and sign up for our enewsletter by sending your name and email address to [email protected]. Look at the Bulletin Boards at the clubhouses, browse our new website, www.lifelonglearningatpc.com, and pick up a copy of the complete schedule at the clubhouse carousels or before any lecture or program after October 1.

When is the first Premier Program of the season?

It’s Friday, October 17, 7:00 p.m. in the Renaissance Theatre when Joe Wiegand brings a one man show about Teddy Roosevelt. See an article about the show elsewhere in this issue of the Post.
