2022-23 Season Opens in October
Tim Pisarski
LifeLong Learning’s new 2022-23 season of interesting, informative, and sometimes provocative programming kicks off in October, starting with the return of trips and Monday Morning Lectures, with classes to resume in November.
“With our new, increased activities schedule—increased after the last two years of pandemic-impacted offerings—we’re excited to be back to a full complement of planned programs,” said Paul Polk, LLL’s president. “Our team of volunteers has been working throughout the summer to line up an amazing array of events.”
Now is the time to start planning for and exploring LLL’s upcoming programs, which run October through April, to mark one’s calendar, and to be among the first to secure a seat at these popular events. Detailed descriptions, dates, and times recently went live on LLL’s website: www.lifelonglearningatpc.org. Here’s a summary of what appears there regarding October offerings:
October Monday Morning Lectures
No need to register; just $5 at the door on the day of the event! All MMLs begin at 10 a.m. in the Tuscany Falls Renaissance Theater.
Oct. 17: Understanding Origins of the War in Ukraine. Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine surprised most experts and scholars. Others considered it a foregone conclusion. Yan Mann, Ph.D., clinical assistant professor at ASU, will discuss whether the invasion is a continuation of the frozen conflict in Eastern Ukraine since 2014 or due to something else.
Oct. 24: Immigration and the American Dream. Thomas J. Davis, Ph.D., ASU professor emeritus and lawyer, will discuss the basic questions of what it means to be an American and how immigrants fit into the American Dream.
Oct. 31: Día de Los Muertos Through Storytelling. Zarco Guerrero, a sculptor, mask maker, and performance artist, will share the meaning of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) through storytelling, using his unique masked characters. His storytelling puts life into perspective in a delightful, engaging way, helping audiences to accept and even to laugh at their most primal fears about death.
Upcoming Trips
Detailed trip descriptions, times and dates—plus easy steps on how to register online—appear at www.lifelonglearningatpc.org.

LLL Instructor Wins Audubon Photography Award
Cathy Lindstrom
The National Audubon Society, headquartered in New York City, has designated a wildlife photograph, taken by PebbleCreek resident Adriana Greisman, among the society’s Top 100 for 2022.
This year, almost 2,500 photographers from across North America submitted nearly 10,000 photographs and videos to the 13th annual Audubon Photography Awards. The awards, for outstanding achievement in bird photography, give just a taste of birds’ glorious varieties. They also showcase a wide array of wildlife photographers’ techniques, as captured in an entertaining and thoughtful behind-the-shot story that accompanies each image. All the winning images, announced July 7, are posted on tinyurl.com/2s449z8c
Greisman is an outstanding photographer with wonderful skills that capture the world and its inhabitants in amazing detail and color. The photograph that put Greisman in Audubon’s Top 100 features a Brandt’s cormorant, male, in breeding plumage. Its lifted head is a courtship behavior that males use to attract females, since males’ throats are such a beautiful blue, and match their eyes!
Greisman is president of PebbleCreek Camera Club and teaches numerous classes on photography, including four sessions scheduled for LifeLong Learning this coming season. For LLL, she will teach how to use Shutterfly to create a photography book (in late November) and how to use Adobe Lightroom to enhance photo processing (in January.) Specific class dates and times are posted at www.lifelonglearningatpc.org.
Lifelong Learning is happy to make PebbleCreek aware of what an artist in photography can accomplish and to congratulate Greisman for this national recognition!
