LifeLong Learning at PebbleCreek

LifeLong Learning lecture series

Lorna Bray

I have had the pleasure of managing the LLL lecture program for the past two seasons along with a great group of volunteers and this past season was another success due in great part to volunteers and the speaker suggestions from PebbleCreekers. This past season, 60% of the Monday Morning and Premier Lecture presentations resulted from recommendations from our community. The lecture team is always open to speaker ideas which can be shared online through the LifeLong Learning website, dropped off at the LifeLong Learning Center or by emailing director Lorna Bray at [email protected].

This past season marked the presentation of over 303 lectures with over 47,000 attendees since the inception of the lecture program in 2005.

The vetting process, which consists of three meetings to discuss and research potential speakers, took place in March and April. We have a large committee of 22 LifeLong Learning volunteers who assist in the research of these speakers to ensure that we can offer quality presentations to the community. The large committee ensures that we have a wide range of diverse opinions on potential speakers in order to provide lectures on varying interests. The last meeting, which is the voting meeting, has taken place and speakers for the 2019-20 season have been contacted; arrangements are being made with them for their appearances as either Monday Morning or Premier lecturers.

We have a great line up of lectures for next season and look forward to seeing you there! Watch for information as we confirm dates and speakers.

LifeLong Learning welcomes the Guitar Group

I am pleased to announce that the PebbleCreek Guitar Club has now joined LifeLong Learning as the Guitar Group, bringing us a new approach to our assortment of lectures, trips, classes and other special programs. The Guitar Group, headed by Jim Sykes, is a group of musicians who will provide educational opportunities to learn more about the history of guitar, the different musical genres in which guitars play important roles and opportunities to hear how guitars are used to create music. The Guitar Group is our second year-round program, along with PC Reads. Residents here during the summer can come and listen to the group and talk with them about guitar music.

The group will hold its sessions on the second and fourth Wednesdays through the summer, from 3:00-5:00 p.m., in the LLL Center, located in the Activities Office complex on the Eagle’s Nest side. While the Guitar Group will not be offering beginner lessons, if you have some skill in guitar and are interested in joining the group, please come to one of the sessions and talk with Jim.

Calling all photographers

Emily Grotta

Last year, when LifeLong Learning asked residents to submit photographs for use on the website and Schedule, the response was so wonderful that we’re doing it again! If your photo is chosen for the cover of the Schedule, the Premier Lecture, the Sunday Series programs or a web banner, you will receive two tickets to a Premier Lecture of your choice.

This year, we’re asking for photos taken in PebbleCreek. They could be of familiar sights – the fountains at Eagle’s Nest or the entrance to Tuscany – or they could be more mysterious, such as a bird’s nest in a tree on a golf course or a rainbow over the clubhouse. If we receive many mysterious photos, we’ll post them and hold a contest to see who can identify the site with winners receiving two Monday Morning Tickets.

Please make sure your photo is high resolution so that it can be printed in color. Please do not send photos with people in them – we would need permission to print – unless it’s a general shot, such as the pickleball court or fitness center.

Sound interesting? Send your photos to Emily Grotta by July 15 at [email protected] with a description of where the photo was taken and your permission to use it.

If you’d like to see the winners from the 2018-19 contest, please visit www.lifelonglearningatpc.org/aboutus/photograllery.
