Kare Bears’ bake sale at Artists’ Holiday Fest
Susan White
Kare Bears is sponsoring a Bake Sale at the PebbleCreek Artists’ Holiday Fest on Saturday, December 5.
We need your help in providing the baked goods. Please deliver your items to the Art Room in the Creative Arts Center between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Friday, December 4 for pricing. Please do not bring any goods on the day of the festival.
We ask that you label all your items. In addition, due to medical issues for many, please include the following:
* if the goods have nuts
* if the goods are sugar-free
* if the goods are gluten-free
Hard plastic containers or zip-lock type bags are preferred for packaging as disposable plates make it difficult to handle goods neatly.
Bob and Hope Ewest are the chairpersons again for this annual event. They and Kare Bears truly appreciate your continued generosity in donating your wonderful creations. All proceeds from this sale are donated to the Kare Bears organization to help support the programs and services which Kare Bears provides to all PebbleCreek residents throughout the year. Help us make this year our biggest yet!
Many thanks to all!

Kare Bears has a deal for you! We are in the process of recruiting residents to assist in the distribution of the 2016 Source Book™. If you helped us in the past, you will be contacted to see if you are again available. If additional volunteers are needed, announcements will be on the PebbleCreek egroup and the Kare Bears website.
The distribution of Source Books by the volunteers will take place on a Sunday in January or early February 2016. That date is unknown at this time. Volunteers will be assigned where we need them in the community and they will have a week to deliver Source Books to all residents.

Do you know someone who could use Thanksgiving Dinner?
Susan White
Kare Bears has been given a unique opportunity to offer a program for seniors in PebbleCreek who could use a free Thanksgiving dinner delivered to their door. The Giving Thanks by Giving Back program is being offered by Freedom Plaza (Brookdale) in Peoria.
Brookdale Senior Living Solutions are providers of services and care for seniors. The Giving Thanks by Giving Back Program has no cost to you or the recipient of the meal. The single serving meal includes: turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. The names that you provide are kept completely confidential and are not put on any kind of mailing or call list by Freedom Plaza.
This is the second year Freedom Plaza is providing this program. The program is for seniors who have no place to go and are unable to go out. It may be for a couple that has one ill spouse and the other is the primary caregiver and they have no additional support.
The meals are pre-cooked, in separate containers, which can be re-heated in the microwave or oven. The single serving meals come in a decorative box. If you know of someone who could really benefit from this wonderful service, please submit their names, addresses and telephone numbers to Hilary Coltman at 760-567-4215 or [email protected]. In addition, if you have neighbors without Internet access, please provide them with this information and give them the opportunity to reply on their own without being referred.
Please call or email Hilary to sign up or if you have questions.

Kare Bears to host blood drive November 14
Susan White
As part of Kare Bears Health and Wellness effort, we are pleased to be offering a Blood Drive open to all residents on Saturday, November 14 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the Eagle’s Nest Parking Lot.
The sign-up sheet is at the Eagle’s Nest Clubhouse across from the Pro Shop. Appointments are scheduled every 15 minutes starting at 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. with the last appointment slot at 1:45 p.m. Two appointments can be scheduled at the same time. If you would rather sign up at home on your computer, there is an instruction sheet explaining this process.
In addition, for those signing up on the computer and to streamline the process on November 14, American Red Cross asks that you register online at www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor keyword: PebbleCreek. If you have a donor card please bring that with you.
Again, the Red Cross Mobile Unit will be at the Eagle’s Nest Parking Lot near the Activities Center. The area will be clearly marked and you will see the mobile van!
Blood Donation Reminders on the Day of the Drive:
1. Hydrate and eat a meal prior to your donation – even better start hydrating the day before.
2. Bring ID with you (Red Cross donor card, driver’s license work well)
3. Make sure you are free of any cold or flu symptoms.
4. Have medication list available if needed.
5. Wear a top with loose fitting sleeves (preferably short sleeves) so that we can check blood pressure and locate the best vein to use to collect your blood.
6. Bring a list of all countries (and cities/areas you have visited – with dates) in the past 12 months and do the same for all European countries you have visited since 1980.
7. You must weigh at least 110 pounds.
8. Waiting period between donations is 56 days for whole blood, 112 days for Double Red Cell Donations.
Did you know you can save three lives just by donating your blood and it will only take a half hour out of your day? In addition, your body produces healthier red cells after a donation; red cells carry oxygen to your vital organs. The blood supply at valley hospitals is in need of constant replenishing.
Also, if you are taking prescription medications, 95% of them are fine and will not prevent you from donating blood. Some examples of acceptable meds are insulin, blood pressure, cholesterol, anti-depressants, thyroid, allergy and aspirin.
If you have any questions, please contact the Kare Bears House at 623-536-1200.
Many thanks for helping Kare Bears help neighbors!
Breast Cancer pillows available
Ronda Jones
The PebbleCreek Quilters had a two day workshop and created 124 Breast Cancer Pillows for the Breast Cancer Support Group of PebbleCreek. They will be given free to any woman undergoing surgery for a lumpectomy or mastectomy. It is important to request the pillow prior to your surgery so you can benefit from it immediately following the surgery.
The pillows have been designed to bring comfort while recovering from surgery. The pillow is placed underneath the arm where the surgery has taken place and is held in place by a piece of elastic. This relieves the pressure on the incision. Another use for the pillow is to place it underneath the car seatbelt so that there is no pressure on the breast following surgery.
For more information on how to obtain this very special pillow, or receive information about the Breast Cancer Support Group, please contact Rayma Scalzo at 623-935-1819, 3785 N. 156th Lane or email [email protected]. She will make sure you receive one.
Please call before going to her home.
The PebbleCreek Quilters welcome you and invite you to stop by the Fiber Arts Room in the Creative Arts Center. Stop by and visit! We are happy to provide you with information concerning the club and any classes that are being offered.
