Sandra Merriweather and Jacqueline Blake-Broughton
Just Folks’ mission is to provide a venue for predominantly African American residents of PebbleCreek who share similar interests, enjoy participating in social events, and like to support the community. During the Just Folks general meeting on Feb. 21, the association elected Jacqueline Blake-Broughton as their new vice president for 2021. Jacqueline is excited about providing innovative ideas to bring members together for social and community events.
As with most social groups, Just Folks experienced a new normal in 2020. We had to cancel our monthly swim parties, our annual picnic, and our trip to see the Black Rodeo. We replaced these with drive by birthday events, virtual meetings, and our virtual New Year’s Eve zoom celebration, Jammin’ In Your Jammies. There was entertainment, games and prizes, and, of course, the New Year’s Eve toast.
Even though we did not have our traditional Christmas Gala, we still continued our tradition of sharing our blessings with others. For 2020, we donated to Tanner Terrace, a residential home for seniors located in Glendale, and we were able to bless a 92-year-old woman who lives in the Tucson area. We were determined to enjoy 2020, and we did.
Although the club is currently not doing any in-person social activities due to the pandemic, we are conducting quarterly virtual events. An upcoming event will be the Spring Fling II: Groovin’ on a Sunday Afternoon, on April 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. for PebbleCreek residents. If you are interested in participating, please contact Jackie Smith at [email protected].
