Jim Haas and his son Andrew Haas were the overall Match Play Format winners of the 2016 PebbleCreek Men’s Golf Association twenty-first annual Member/Guest Tournament. The tourney was held on Thursday, April 28 at Tuscany Falls and on Friday, April 29 at Eagle’s Nest. Immediately after regulation play was concluded on Friday, the overall winners were determined in a playoff held on hole No. 9 of the new nine at Tuscany Falls.

Each two-man team had a choice whether to play traditional stroke play or match play. So we really had two tournaments within a tournament. The Match-Play Format consisted of five nine-hole matches. There were three groups within each of the three flights. Each group consisted of six two-man teams. Over the two days, every team played against each of the other five teams in their respective group. A point was awarded for each hole won. Highest number of accumulated points for all five matches wins their group.

Group Winners:

Flight A: Group 1 Jack Schafer/Scott Osbourn; Group 2 Dick Wiederhold/Steve Wiederhold; Group 3 Bill Schaffer/Mark Schaffer

Flight B: Group 1 Bob Newell/Kyle Laudenslager; Group 2 Roy Bridges/Bart Price; Group 3 Jim Haas/Andrew Haas

Flight C: Group 1 John Birds/Bruce Grout; Group 2- Jim Scoular/Don Mann; Group 3 Harry Apodaca/Bill Wallschlaeger

The nine group winners met on hole No. 9 of the new nine at Tuscany Falls to determine the overall winners using an alternate shot format. This was the first time in tournament history that this hole was utilized for the playoff. Two different tees and hole placements were used. The first hole played as a 360-yard par 4. The second hole as a 150-yard par 3. Initially the three group winners in each flight competed in a two-hole shootout with one team eliminated after the first playoff hole. The winning team from each flight then advanced to the finals. Bill Barnard and Jason Whitehill conducted this playoff.

After the first playoff round Bill Schaffer and Mark Schaffer advanced from Flight A. Jim Haas and Andrew Haas advanced from Flight B. John Birds and Bruce Grout advanced from Flight C.

In front of a large gallery surrounding the green, John and Bruce were eliminated after the first hole of the finals when Andrew drained a par putt. That left Bill and Mark to take on Jim and Andrew on the final hole. Both teams hit the par 3 green in regulation. Then Andrew did it again by draining a birdie putt to win the overall Match Play Format.

Congratulations to all the group winners and especially Jim and Andrew!

Many, many thanks to all the folks who volunteered (registration, hole monitors, skills challenge etc.). We could not do it without you!
