Goodyear City Council member Wally Campbell was selected to serve on the National League of Cities’ (NLC) Board of Directors during the organizations recent Congress of Cities and Exposition Conference in Austin, Texas, in late November.
Campbell was selected to fill one of 14 open seats on the 40 person board. The board is comprised of elected officials and state municipal league executive directors from around the United States. Members serve a two year term. Campbell, who is the only elected city official to serve on the NLC board, will join Executive Director Ken Strobeck, of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, as the only two board representatives from Arizona. Previous to her appointment Campbell served on NLC’s Transportation and Infrastructure Services Steering Committee and Military Network Committee.
The board of directors leads NLC in setting the agenda for the year, developing long-term goals and directing the overall governance of the organization. The board position is voted on by the organization’s membership at its annual business meeting, which falls on the last day of the conference.
“I am excited and looking forward to serving on the National League of Cities’ Board of Directors,” Campbell said. “It’s quite an honor to be selected. The board and the committees we work with are facing a lot of challenging issues across the nation in the way of transportation, infrastructure, public safety, the environment, social services and our military. It’s amazing what all they do.”
Campbell went on to say that another important mission of the NLC board is to influence policy making on the federal level. The organization’s top priorities include supporting the Marketplace Fairness Act, protecting municipal bonds and encouraging investment in local transportation projects.
Campbell first was elected to Goodyear City Council in March of 2011 to complete the term of former Vice Mayor Georgia Lord, which ended June 2013. She was re-elected in March of 2013 to serve a four year term. Previous to her election, Council member Campbell served on multiple city of Goodyear boards, commissions and committees.
Council member Campbell has been active with community building efforts since she retired after a career in California state government. She got her start in public service with the city’s Public Safety Citizens Advisory Committee and currently serves on ex-Governor Jan Brewer’s Board of Examiners of Nursing Care Institution Administrators and Assisted Living Facility Managers.
The National League of Cities (NLC) is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages.
