The PebbleCreek Genealogy Club (PCGC) next meets on Monday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to noon. PCGC meets the second Monday of each month in the Palm Room in the Eagle’s Nest Clubhouse from 9 a.m. to noon. Guests are always welcome to our speaker programs!
In July and August we will hold members-only workshops instead of following the usual format. On July 14 the focus will be on how to use Ancestry.com to dig more deeply into your family history. The Aug. 11 workshop will focus on FamilySearch, especially the new full text search capabilities. As for the usual meetings, the workshops will be in the Palm Room in the Eagle’s Nest Clubhouse from 9 to 11 a.m. Bring your laptop or tablet, a research question, and explore these resources with us.
Our guest speakers will return in September with the following programs:
Sept. 8: “Facts Not Fables: The Art of Evidence-Based Genealogy” by John Spearman.
Oct. 13: “Using Probate Records for Genealogical Research” by Janna Larson.
Nov. 10: “The Mayflower: An Interesting Mix of Passengers” by Suzanne Brayer.
January and beyond: The Program Committee is finalizing speakers on using newspapers, census records, U.S. immigration and naturalization records, DNA testing, and organizing your research. Stay tuned for details.
What did you miss? The June 9 meeting focused on using federal documents in genealogy research. Kori Tueller (Administrator of the State of Arizona Research Library) and Myrrh Morningstar (Government Information Librarian at the State of Arizona Research Library) were our speakers. Ms. Tueller gave a brief introduction to the Arizona Memory Project and Ms. Morningstar spoke on “Finding Family: A Genealogist’s Guide to Federal Documents.” She provided an overview of the State of Arizona Research Library, the U.S. Government Publishing Office, and the Federal Depository Library Program. She briefly addressed resources available at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Members were impressed by the copious print and online resources available from the federal government.
On the social front, members are enjoying our monthly luncheons; it’s a great opportunity to get to know one another and discuss genealogy and more. Members should keep an eye out for an email regarding dates and locations.
We’ll be gathering at the Oasis Pool in August for an evening potluck and again for our December meeting when we will share holiday memories and traditions.
Genealogy Detectives are available to assist members get started on research or when they are “stuck.”
