Expressions Gallery – how to consign your art pieces

Sherry Blatner

Live in PebbleCreek? Crafty? Artistic? What are you waiting for? Put your talent out there for everyone to enjoy.

Nothing should stop you. The only business plan you need is a visit to the Gallery to pick up a Consignment Agreement packet. You need to read the Agreement, sign it, and complete a W-9 form providing your social security number. Eek! Really? Yes! The Gallery is a business.

For a 21% consignment fee on each sale, the Gallery collects the sales tax for you, covers credit card purchase fees, provides you a monthly check for the net amount of the sale and, best of all, provides a fabulous venue to showcase your creations right in your neighborhood. You don’t need to incorporate, get a business license, hire a lawyer or accountant, design a web page or handle shipping or returns; there are no returns!

Now, don’t get too excited, because if you really draw a following, the Gallery also provides you and Uncle Sam a 1099 for total annual sales of $600 or more.

After you’re signed up, you will receive a consignor number that is placed on the sales tag of each item you bring in to sell. Here’s where you need to curb your enthusiasm, but just a little. No one can submit unlimited numbers of items; staff will advise you of Gallery guidelines.

Pricing is an interesting guessing game for those of us who have spent years gifting friends and family with our priceless, handmade treasures. Take a look around the Gallery and compare prices of items similar to your craft items. Track the cost of your supplies, include the 21% cost of doing business in the Gallery and don’t forget profit.

The summer is a great time to stay cool indoors and craft or paint. It’s nice to join a club and share experiences with others who share your creative interests, but club membership is not required to become a consignor. So, no stalling now; you know how easy it is to become a professional artisan. And just wait until you cash that first check!
