Enhancing Personal Safety—Tips to Incorporate Smarter, Safer Habits

Lisa Berry, M.ED, Public Information Officer, Goodyear Police Department

February is a good reminder to protect ourselves and our loved ones and a good time to review key steps to ensure our personal safety. Situational awareness is important every day, everywhere.

We live in a fast-paced world, one full of distractions, which is why personal safety should be a top priority. Whether taking a leisurely walk, hitting the shopping center, or simply running errands, adopting a few simple yet effective safety practices can make a significant difference.

The Goodyear Police Department offers these six simple tips to help you stay safe in various situations.

1. Be aware of your surroundings. We often find ourselves immersed in the busyness of daily life, lost in our thoughts or distractions. Make a conscious effort to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid becoming an easy target through excessive use of headphones or staring at a cell phone, especially in unfamiliar or isolated areas. Keep your head up, stay aware, and save the distractions for a safer environment.

2. Travel in pairs or groups. There’s safety in numbers. When possible, walk or shop with a friend or in a group. This practice provides companionship, and acts as a deterrent to would-be criminals.

3. Park wisely. Park in well-lit and populated areas. Visibility is key … well-lit areas reduce the likelihood that criminals will hide or sneak up on you. Populated areas increase the likelihood that someone will notice suspicious activity.

4. See suspicious activity or person? Report it. Trust your instincts. If something just doesn’t feel right, report it without delay. For crimes in progress, call 911 immediately. Timely reporting can help law enforcement respond quicker. Remember … see something, say something!

5. Seek assistance when needed. While shopping, if uncomfortable walking to your car alone, ask store security to accompany you. Store security is there to help, so take advantage of their presence.

6. Avoid overloading yourself. When shopping, be conscious about not overloading yourself with bags. Having your hands full can impede your ability to react swiftly or defend yourself. Consider using a shopping cart or have a companion with you to help.

Criminals often target those who appear vulnerable or distracted, they prefer crimes of opportunity. By adopting these safety measures, the likelihood of becoming a victim decreases dramatically.

Empower yourself by incorporating these simple yet effective habits into your routine. When you navigate the world with confidence and attentiveness, it plays a role in preventing crime, thus contributing to a safer community.

Stay safe! Make sure you never take safety for granted.
