Two crucial and important issues for the upcoming general election in November are abortion access and fair elections. In February the PebbleCreek Democratic Club welcomes speakers from two organizations pursuing these two goals. Information about issues pertinent to how we might cast our votes is paramount. Members are keen to be educated on these two major issues.
Arizona for Abortion Access is a coalition of reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations working to ensure Arizonans can make the decisions that are best for them and their families without government interference. This ballot committee has begun collecting signatures to place a constitutional amendment on the November 2024 ballot. This amendment is proposed to protect abortion access in Arizona and ensure every person can make this deeply personal decision with dignity. At the meeting there will be an opportunity to sign petitions to support this ballot initiative.
Make Elections Fair Arizona initiative proposes to create an open primary by eliminating taxpayer funding for partisan elections, including independent and unaffiliated voters and candidates. The Initiative proposes to allow all voters to participate in every election, allowing all candidates to appear on the same ballot. The Initiative also supports changes to the state election system to guarantee the right of all voters to vote and all qualified candidates to compete in all publicly funded, publicly administered elections, regardless of their party affiliation or non-affiliation. Proponents indicate that an open primary means that every voter can vote in every election making elected officials more accountable and promoting equal treatment for all voters and candidates.
The PebbleCreek Democratic Club looks forward to hearing speakers from these two organizations at their Feb. 7 meeting in the Tuscany Falls Clubhouse Ballroom. The social hour begins at 6 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. The club meetings are always open and all are welcome.
