Democratic Club Launches New Season

Gillian Driscoll

The PebbleCreek Democratic Club gathered on Oct. 25 to have fun. Inspired by the theme “Gangsters and Flappers,” the social committee transformed the Tuscany Falls Ballroom into a celebration of fashion, food, and easy conversation. Flappers abounded. Criminals were bailed out of jail. It was a time to relax, enjoy each other, and launch a new season of learning, exploring, questioning, and advocating.

The club, which has a membership of over 360, meets monthly to discuss issues that impact us locally, at the state level and in Washington. Goodyear elected officials regularly attend our meetings and the club offers an easy way to hear about everything from the development of Goodyear Square to water management and how it is regulated throughout Goodyear. Due to the size and influence of the club, we are also able to attract statewide leaders such as Attorney General Kris Mayes and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, both of whom have led highly interactive presentations for us. Ruben Gallego has met with us as well; he is one of Arizona’s two U.S. Senatorsthe other being Mark Kelly. Beyond elected leaders, the club hosts advocates on a broad variety of issues such as education, veterans’ affairs, and election integrity.

While the monthly meeting is the center of the club’s life, there is so much more to explore. In addition to parties such as the “Gangsters and Flappers” event, there are game nights, regular club meals, bookclubs, picnics, and trips to local theatres. The club is an integral support to local nonprofit organizations such as Agua Fria Food and Clothing Bank and St. Mary’s Food Bank, so there are plenty of opportunities to serve the greater community. And of course, the club makes it easy for members to become involved in voter registration drives, postcard writing campaigns, and other political action in the greater Phoenix area.

Everyone is welcome to attend club meetings and it is not expected that members are registered Democratsor, in fact, registered to vote at all. We know that our PebbleCreek population includes folks from several countries as well as residents who vote in states other than Arizona. If it has crossed your mind to give it a try, we encourage you to stop by!

The November club meeting will be held on Nov. 4 and the speaker will be Goodyear Mayor Joe Pizzillo and several members of the leadership team for the City of Goodyear. In December we will meet on Dec. 2 and look forward to hosting Arizona and Maricopa Democratic Party leaders. The meetings start at 6:45 p.m. and are preceded by a social time beginning at 6 p.m. Both meetings will be held in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom.
