Alisa Moore
Our November meeting brought together more than 200 members and visiting friends. We gathered in the Eagle’s Nest Ballroom to share the excitement of the upcoming holidays and to mingle with folks not seen in months. The room was packed! After the social hour, we heard from Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, now a candidate for governor of Arizona, who shared her goals for the office and took questions from the audience.
In addition, President John Moore updated the membership on the redistricting maps that are approaching their final design; introduced two more candidates for Goodyear City Council, as well as attendees circulating petitions; announced the upcoming LD 13 meeting, Salsa & Politics event, and other candidate events; and welcomed more new members (the club keeps growing!). He also reminded everyone that elections for the new club board will be held in January and that a nominating committee will be contacting people to see who might be interested in serving in a leadership position for the club. Those interested are encouraged to speak to any current board members. Names and phone numbers are on the website.
Social Committee Chair Frankie Veltri encouraged everyone to purchase tickets to our last social event for 2021, the Winter Wonderland Dinner/Dance on Dec. 5. She announced other upcoming events, including the Nov. 15 Ladies’ Luncheon and the Nov. 27 Sound of Miracles Motown Concert. The monthly Men’s Breakfast, weekly Saturday breakfasts, and game nights continue as well.
Outreach Chair Judy Hart said Agua Fria Food and Clothing Bank (AFFCB), the club supported non-profit, will welcome donations of turkeys from Nov. 8 to 12, as well as funds to be used to fill the Thanksgiving baskets for our community residents in need. Last month, we donated 177 pounds of clothing and household goods to the Phoenix Mission, as AFFCB is not currently accepting those items.
At the meeting’s end, as the club thanked them for their service, veterans in attendance came to the front of the ballroom for a group photo with Katie Hobbs.
We do not have a meeting in December, but we look forward to seeing everyone at the Winter Wonderland Dinner/Dance on Dec. 5, and at our Jan. 5 meeting, where we will kick off a very busy election year!
