A superior day is one that stands apart from the oh so hum-drum different day, same stuff days because you did, saw, experienced something special. Lucky for you a superior day is waiting for you in, OMG – this is a coincidence, Superior, Arizona! Only one hour east of Phoenix on U.S. 60, the sleepy façade of this quaint town belies its turbulent history. You can learn the fascinating details at the home of former Arizona Governor Bob Jones, now a museum. While this old mining town might be best known as the home of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, you’ll also find pleasant restaurants and shops in the brightly colored buildings along Main Street. Explore its tumble-down alleys and you’ll find the fading beauty of thought provoking murals painted by unknown artists. When the Queen Creek section of U.S. 60 was moved “out of town,” old highway 60 became a delightful hiking trail. Look for the trailhead next to the itinerant Queen Creek just off of Magma Avenue. You’ll cross over the creek on the original bridge and soon have a fantastic view of the new Queen Creek Bridge built in 1949. The hike will also take you through the old Claypool Tunnel, circa 1922. Whether in town or on the trail, you’ll find yourself in the shadow of Apache Leap Mountain where legend says that 75 Apache warriors chose to leap to their deaths rather than be taken by U.S. cavalry troops. Okay, I get it. You’re stimulated right now. You are, after all, reading the PebbleCreek Post. The thing is, tomorrow could become one of those oh so hum-drum different day, same stuff days; so visit www.superiorarizonachamber.org and plan to have a Superior day!
