The ballots have been tallied and members of the PebbleCreek Cinema Society have chosen the New Zealand film The Patriarch as the best of their fourth season of outstanding films. According to those in the know, the voting was very close, with the New Zealand epic narrowly beating out the highly acclaimed (and very long 167-minute German film) The Tunnel.
Members of the PebbleCreek Cinema Society get to view carefully selected motion pictures offered by the top major and independent studios often before they are released to the public. The Patriarch, originally titled Mahana (the patriarch’s family name) will be in wide release in the coming months. The film, based on a book by Witi Ihimaera (author of The Whale Rider), is a tale of family rivalry and reconciliation, set against the stunning backdrop of rural New Zealand in the 1960s.
“Wow, what a great season we had,” enthused Traci Baker, Director of Activities. “We saw films from all over the world—Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, New Zealand, USA—carefully selected just for us by Andy Friedenberg, Director of the Cinema Society. And, we had some incredible special guests, including some of the stars and executives involved with the films. Just a great, memorable season.”
The PebbleCreek Cinema Society has grown over the years and memberships for the 2018-2019 season will be offered to current members before opening up memberships to new subscribers. Be sure to look for renewal details over the summer. Renewals are anticipated to open in mid-September and new memberships in October. Season passes will be $120.
