Camera Club Photo of the Month

‘Velvety Elk’—Adriana Greisman’s impressive close-up of a bull elk in Yellowstone at dusk, illustrating great bokeh; photo was taken with a Canon EOS R5, F4, ISO 1250, 1/250 sec., 400 mm lens.

For September’s Photo of the Month, the Camera Club selected a dramatic close-up of a bull elk taken by club member Adriana Griesman while visiting Grand Teton National Park in May. As Adriana was heading home after sunset one evening, she came across this male elk with his antlers starting to grow back. They look beautiful with the layer of velvet, however, his fur is transitioning from winter to summer so he looks rather shaggy! If you follow the news, you see frequent incidents where tourists are injured because they get too close to wildlife. However, this wasn’t a problem for Adriana since she used a 400 mm telephoto lens so that she could capture the image from a safe distance; note also that this picture provides a good example of the narrow depth of field associated with a telephoto lens since the head and neck are in sharp focus while the rear of the elk and background are in soft focus.
