Bob Curtis made a hole-in-one on Wednesday, April 29, at the Tuscany Falls East golf course. His magic occurred on the par-3 fourth hole during play with the Back Tee Boys golf group.
The hole was playing 180 yards from the black tees. The pin was located in the center of the green just behind the two front bunkers. It was a tough shot as there is a severe downslope just short of the hole. Bob hit his 5-wood after teeing up the ball very high. The shot never wavered off line toward the flagstick. It’s always a guessing game as players cannot see the ball land, because of the bunkers in front.
Bob’s playing partners included Wayne Gearig, Bill Koehn, and Gregg Clymer. Wayne was the first to drive up to the green. Wayne yelled, “That’s in the hole,” as he could still see the ball sitting on top of the foam insert. FYI, as a safety precaution with respect to COVID-19, foam inserts had been placed inside the holes to allow players to remove their golf ball without touching the cup. The existence of the foam insert makes Bob’s ace even more amazing.
COVID-19 sure had an impact on Bob’s celebration. Instead of the congratulatory high-fives and back-slaps, he had to maintain a social distance of 6-feet and could only tap clubs with his partners. The traditional “buy a round of drinks” at the bar after the round and celebrate together to share stories was verboten due to the coronavirus. The lockdown situation certainly will make this hole-in-one memorable for years to come.
This was Bob’s second hole-in-one. His first came in 2000. He has been playing golf for over 50 years and was a member of Riverside Country Club in Portland. He and his wife Kathi moved to PebbleCreek in 2016, following many Riverside members. He is a retired Alaska Air captain.
Congratulations to Bob on this terrific feat!
