On Memorial Day at the pool room we toasted members and officers, current and past.
Blair Dreyfus
It was a dark and stormy night … honest. I know we don’t have many of those but my cat, Shadow, would attest if he could talk! Here’s all the news about our club that’s fit to print!
We have five more members who have dropped off shirts to have our club logo embroidered on them so that they might help promote the club by wearing them around PebbleCreek whenever they are playing cards or shooting pool or even just eating lunch. So if you spot someone in one of our logo shirts—tell them they look good and ask them what you need to do to become a member yourself. Our membership rolls are growing almost daily. Yes, I am tooting our own horn as we have made a concerted effort to grow our club lately. You might have seen our new brochures in the brown turntable by the front desk at BOTH Eagle’s Nest and Tuscany Falls. As a matter of fact we have reprinted and replaced the brochures in BOTH locations, so we know people are interested.
I’d like to make mention of our growing number of women showing interest in our club. In the past four weeks we have added four new ladies to our numbers, and I know that three of our male members’ wives are planning to join shortly. This will bring our numbers up to 11 members of the fairer sex. Several of these women are beginners who are giving it a try. The majority of these women can play a good game of pool. As President I pulled rank and set aside three specific days and times for Ladies Only—they are noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. If you are a woman reading this article , please come and give it a try. You might find out that you like the game that many of us find fascinating!
Pool or Billiards, call it what you will, is a contest made up of chess and bowling with a touch of math and cunning mixed in. And you thought it was just a stick and some balls on a table with holes in it— au contraire! You ask, bowling? When you bowl, you knock pins down with a ball. In pool, you hit balls into a pocket with a cue stick. If you enjoy bowling, chances are you might also like pool, and the sticks are much lighter than a bowling ball. Chess you ask? Certainly, a huge portion of the game is deciding which balls to knock in in which order, much like removing men in a game of chess. So, if you like chess, you might like pool as well. Math, egads! Yes there IS some math—geometry to be exact. A pool table is a rectangle and balls struck at a certain angle will always rebound at that same angle when they strike either another ball or cushion (should it miss the hole you were trying to make it in)! Once you are able to see that rebound angle, the cunning comes into play as you can use those angles to set up another shot or knock an opponent’s ball out of your way. When you first begin to play—yeah, it is what it seems. But as you learn the nuances of the game it turns into something that hooks you.
Here’s hoping it gets its hooks into you, too! Tournament winners from last month are listed below. Congrats to them all!
