Blair Dreyfus
I’m going into my fourth month as the PebbleCreek Billiard Club president and I am looking forward to the rest of the year. I went into this endeavor with a list of quite a few things that I wanted to accomplish. So far we’ve gotten our website up and running. We’ve initiated an online reservation system. And, as of the writing of this article, most of our club’s travel team are sporting shirts with our club logo on them.
Our club’s tournament directors had provided opportunities for our members to participate in morning and afternoon 8-, 9-, and 10–ball tournaments. At first, each of these events had enough participation to warrant their continuation, however, we have seen a marked decline in the participation level in several of these events. Because of that the Monday noon to 2 p.m. 8-ball tournament has been reformatted as an abbreviated 8-ball event using only 4 solid and 4 striped balls and the 8-ball racked in a 9-ball formation. The initial event was well attended and the participants enjoyed the format. Mission accomplished! The Friday 4 to 6 p.m. 10-ball time slot will be revamped as well. Club members should be on the lookout for a text or email letting them know how this time slot will be filled.
The way to a better game is practice. That should be a four letter word, as many of us don’t practice correctly. We sign up for the use of the tables but then we rack up the balls for 8-ball and simulate games—that is not going to help you improve. I, like many of us our age, cannot practice for any extended period of time as my back and hip just won’t allow it. Fifteen or 20 minutes tops and I’m done. But when I do practice, I practice drills—not very sexy practicing drills but very effective. We all run in cycles—we have trouble with banks or long cut shots or rail shots—so we should be practicing those. Come on out and see how those drills can be turned into a fun competition.
Thanks for making my term in office a good one, so far. Oops, almost forgot to mention the monthly winners for March.
