Bill Volm won the 2015 PebbleCreek Men’s Golf Association Club Championship in style in a grueling three day test from the back tees with a total score of 224. The club championship was conducted on February 19, 25 and 26 with two rounds at Eagle’s Nest and one round on the Falls/Palms Course at Tuscany Falls. From the back tees the courses play about 6,800 yards.
Bill is known as one of the longest hitters at PebbleCreek. The key to his win was long accurate drives of 250 yards or more. That allowed him to hit many greens in regulation making lots of pars and some birdies. That’s not to say there weren’t any hiccups along the way. In the first round he made two triple bogies, one of which included a four putt from five feet. Even with those two blow-up holes, he shot 79 to lead by two shots.
The players were re-paired for the second round based on first round scores. With only a two shot lead, Bill went into match play mode. He played well, carding a 74. However, his closest competitor Brian Maine made a charge on the back nine with a score of two under par 34 to tie Bill’s score of 74. Bill retained his two shot lead over Brian going into the third and final round.
Bill started the final round strong going two under par through the first five holes at Eagle’s Nest. Brian faltered a bit early. As a result, Bill found himself with an eight shot lead. He played solid from there in and carded a career best round (from the back tees) of one under par 71 to claim the title of 2015 PCMGA Club Champion.
A total of 108 players competed at this year’s PCMGA club championship. There was one championship flight playing from the back tees, three flights playing from the blue tees and one flight playing from the white tees (net only).
