Artist of the month

Sylvia Armstrong

Sharon Adamy

Resident Sylvia Armstrong found an immediate niche in the PebbleCreek community by becoming a member of the Art Club and serving on a committee for the 2017 Art Walk. She will also join the 2019 PC Art Club board as Vice President this year. Born and raised in Alberta, Canada, Sylvia and Irving moved to the West Valley from Castle Rock, CO, where they had previously lived for 22 years. In search of an over 55 community, Irving Armstrong googled that criterium and discovered PebbleCreek to be number one on the list. That and the fact that two golfing buddies from his past had moved here were enough to prompt a trip to our community. It took no more than one visit to trigger a move to PebbleCreek.

Sylvia was introduced to the fun of art making when she attended a wine and paint night four years ago. Since that event, she has pursued her interests by taking workshops in watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, oil and now sculpture. Along the way, Sylvia has won some awards from the Castle Rock Art Guild, the Parker Art Guild and, recently, the PebbleCreek Art Club Art Walk. Sylvia is passionate about vibrant colors and uses lots of pigment in her art. She paints portraits, musicians and abstracts. The inspiration for her award winning In the Fog was a result of a new glazing technique she had learned in one of her classes. Always interested in educating herself with new techniques and ideas, Sylvia also learns from YouTube and the internet, as well as locally offered workshops.

Irving and Sylvia are passionate about travel and do as much as possible. A favorite trip was a cruise from San Diego south around the horn and ending in Buenos Aires. Sometimes Sylvia paints subjects from their travels as have many of our past Artists of the Month. But more often she selects subjects from her imagination or uses photos to inspire a creation rather than copy one. This summer the Armstrongs will escape the heat with trips to California and Canada and will probably use those occasions to visit their two daughters and grandchildren in Utah and Canada.

To see the artwork of Sylvia Armstrong, please visit the showcase in the Creative Arts Center. On exhibit at the Tuscany reception desk is Intrigued and at Eagle’s Nest enjoy All That Jazz. Thank you, Sylvia, for sharing your gifts with PebbleCreek.
