The Agua Fria High School District is proud to announce the approval of a groundbreaking project set to elevate arts education and cultural enrichment in the West Valley. The Arts Academy and Performing Arts Center will be a state-of-the-art high school and performance venue located at Litchfield and Camelback Road, on the historic La Loma hilltop designated by the Litchfield family in the 1920s for arts and cultural purposes. This initiative aims to revitalize the area, establishing it as a community hub for artistic expression and engagement.
“For many years, I’ve been working on building up the development situation so the city is sustainable. We have the property because the Litchfield family wanted to make sure the property was used in a way that was consistent with what Paul Litchfield envisioned back in the 1920s—a cultural and performing arts area,” said Litchfield Park Mayor Thomas Schoaf. “It’s always been a cultural center, so the challenge was how we could bring it back.”
The Arts Academy and Performing Arts Center will be center stage on the historic La Loma hilltop. Set to open in August 2026, the new high school will offer a robust curriculum centered on visual and performing arts. Students will benefit from real-world learning opportunities, including mentorship by industry professionals in fields such as filmmaking, music production, lighting, sound design, sculpting, and performance. The Arts Academy will offer six specialized Academies to prepare students for success in college and careers in the arts. Students will build a diverse and well-rounded portfolio by collaborating across all disciplines, preparing them for a dynamic future in the arts.
The Performing Arts Center will be a beacon for cultural enrichment, hosting renowned regional, national, and international artists. These performances and exhibitions will provide the West Valley with access to high-caliber arts experiences. For students, these opportunities will include invaluable hands-on training alongside professionals, further enhancing their learning journey and understanding of various arts industries.
Designed to meet the needs of both students and the broader community, the facility will feature a 700-seat theater, a grand lobby, and high-tech rehearsal and studio spaces, including a recording studio and cinematography studio built to industry standards.
Funding for the Arts Academy and Performing Arts Center was made possible by the 2023 bond supported by the community, in partnership with the City of Litchfield Park, which has generously provided the land on a 75-year long-term lease for just $1 per year.
“The Arts Academy and Performing Arts Center will not only support academic choice for our students but also enhance the cultural vibrancy of the entire West Valley,” said Superintendent Mark Yslas. “It will inspire creativity, foster community connections, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. This project embodies our mission to champion creativity, educational excellence, and strong ties with the community.”
