“What an evening,” was the comment from one attendee of the March meeting of the PebbleCreek Democratic Club. The featured speaker was Professor Paul Bender, Dean Emeritus of the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. He held the audience captive as he spoke about the impact of Supreme Court Justice Scalia’s death on upcoming cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Professor Bender is widely respected for his knowledge of U.S. and Arizona State constitutional law. He has argued more than twenty cases before the US Supreme Court.
The large audience heard his perspectives on how the U.S. Supreme Court could function with the eight remaining Justices and the likelihood of President Obama presenting a candidate to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat. Topics such as abortion rights, equal education and same sex marriage were also discussed. At one point he was asked whether Republican Presidential candidate Ted Cruz was actually eligible to run for the Presidency to which he answered to the affirmative. Overall it was an informative and engaging evening.
