Greg O’Connor celebrates his first ace
Howie Tiger
On Aug. 13, Greg O’Connor made a hole-in-one on the 12th hole at Eagle’s Nest. He did it while playing in a PebbleCreek Men’s Golf Association (PCMGA) event where the format was 2 Net with 3 Net on par 3’s. As such, Greg now qualifies for the PCMGA annual hole-in-one prize. Greg is our current PCMGA President and this was his first hole-in–one in his 60 years playing golf.
The 12th hole was playing 156 yards from the blue tees to a front-right pin placement. Greg’s playing partners were Tom Murch, Jeff Dines, and Randy Netherda. Greg hit his 6-iron with a slight draw just right of the flagstick. Randy yelled, “That looks like it could go into the hole!” A slight hill kept them from seeing the base of the flagstick from the tee. Randy accompanied Greg to the hole and sure enough, Randy was right. Greg said, “It only took 60 years for this to happen.” The celebration commenced! The team was kind of in a daze as they still had 9 more holes to play.
Greg was born in Gary, Ind., and raised in Highland, Ind. He spent most of his adult life in Noblesville, Ind., a suburb of Indianapolis. He graduated from Butler University with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Finance. While at Butler, he played on their golf team for four years. His team were the Conference champs for two of those four years. Another college golf highlight for Greg was the opportunity to play with John Cook (then a member of Ohio State’s team) for two rounds at an Ohio State Invitational. John later turned professional with 11 PGA Tour wins and 10 PGA Tour Champions wins.
Greg earned his MBA in Finance at night while working for American Fletcher Bank. The bank was nice enough to pay his way for his MBA.
He spent his entire 44-year career in Banking in Indiana. Other than American Fletcher, he worked at Huntington Bank, First Indiana Bank, Bank of Montreal, and Marshall & Ilsley.
Greg also had a career in politics while in Noblesville. He was elected to their City Council for four 4-year terms between 2008 and 2024.
As our current PCMGA President, he previously served as our VP and Secretary.
Congrats to Greg for finally making that phenomenal shot!
