News from Robson Reserve: October in Arizona

Agie Olmedo, Executive Director

October is one of those wonderful times in Arizona when we finally begin to see hints that cooler weather is on the way. Mornings become more inviting, evenings are perfect for the patio, and our neighborhoods come alive as residents spend more time outdoors.

With Halloween approaching, October also brings more visitors, families, children, delivery vehicles, and foot traffic into our neighborhoods. It is a great time to enjoy the season while keeping a few simple safety practices in mind.

Enjoy the Season Safely

Light the way. If you plan to welcome trick-or-treaters, make sure your porch, walkway, and entryway are well lit. Check for uneven surfaces, decorations, cords, planters, or other items that could become tripping hazards.

Keep pathways clear. Halloween decorations are fun, but avoid placing them where guests need to walk. Battery-operated candles are also a safer alternative to open flames in pumpkins and other decorations.

Be cautious when opening your door. Halloween can bring unfamiliar people to our doors. Before opening your home, take a moment to see who is outside. If you feel uncomfortable, there is no obligation to answer the door.

Remember that crowds can create opportunities. Busy sidewalks and groups at the door can make it easier for an unfamiliar person to blend in. Keep other exterior doors, garages, gates, and vehicles secured. Avoid leaving valuables, purses, keys, or personal information visible near your entrance.

Watch for pedestrians. If you are driving on Halloween afternoon or evening, slow down and be especially alert around intersections, driveways, parked vehicles, and areas where children or visitors may unexpectedly cross.

Let your home signal whether you are participating. Traditionally, a porch light turned on lets trick-or-treaters know they are welcome. If you would rather enjoy a quiet evening, keeping the front of your home dark can help indicate that you are not participating.

Most importantly, enjoy everything that makes October in Arizona special—beautiful evenings, neighbors reconnecting outdoors, and the beginning of one of our favorite seasons.
