Billiards Club President’s Message

Blair Dreyfus

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day! Who am I kidding. If you’re like me you did nothing unusual on Labor Day because every day is a holiday when you’re retired! I did watch the news about all the problems people had driving and flying to and from their destinations and I just thanked my lucky stars that I’m not in the middle of any of it. Although I did do one unusual thing on Labor Day—I went to get gas and some brisket at Buc–ees. THAT was as much of a zoo as I needed.

Okay, here’s something to ponder. In any sport you can play for the fun of playing or play to win! I learned at an early age that losing sucks! So I play to win! Sometimes, that makes me feel good and sometimes it just frustrates the heck out of me. I do something that others might not do. If I ‘feel’ that I am better at something than my opposition, I am really hard on myself if I lose. That takes the fun out of it and I’m afraid that every once in a while my actions take the fun out of it for everyone else. NOT GOOD! So, I’m going to try to be a gracious winner and a gracious loser, too! We’ll see how that goes.

Since it’s far easier to be a gracious winner, I’ve been trying to practice a little more than I had been previously. I do play in three leagues outside of PebbleCreek. And I play in two or three of our weekly tournaments and a couple of days with others just for the sake of playing. I made the incorrect assumption that all that play would keep me sharp. Nope! I have found that it doesn’t help me correct my faults. Practice is the only way to correct them. So I’ve started taking 10 minutes out of my day to work on my set-up, stroke, AND keeping my dang head still. Lately my set-up feels better and my stroke is okay, but I still struggle with keeping my head still and down all the way through the shot. Anyone think hypnosis will help? I’ll let you know!
