As summer gives way to fall and our snowbirds return to PebbleCreek, the Ceramics Club invites you to join a season of creativity, learning, and friendship. Whether you’re returning after a summer getaway or discovering ceramics for the first time, there’s something for everyone in the months ahead.
New Beginners Class
Mark your calendars for the first beginners’ class of the season, Oct. 3, for those interested in exploring the craft of ceramics. Class costs include two ceramic pieces—a greenware vase and a bisque mug. The greenware requires sanding with special tools to prepare it for painting. Because it has not yet been fired, it is quite fragile. The bisque piece has been cleaned and fired and is glaze-ready. All supplies are included in the class fee. Watch for flyers with additional details and get ready to discover a new creative art.
Workshop Wednesdays
Open exclusively to members, these two-hour classes feature themes selected by our Board members. Students may select what kind of piece they wish to use for the exercise, unlike Specialty classes where a design is chosen in advance by the instructor. Popular Workshop projects have introduced members to silk screening, shaving cream, bubbles, and sgraffito, using mugs, vases, plates, or platters. Students choose and pay for the article they want to use, as well as the paints, supplies, and the cost of firing.
Specialty Classes
Held on Saturdays, these three- to four-hour classes are taught by our instructors or trained staff, with all supplies included in the class fee. Students work on the same type of piece—for example, a round plate—using a design chosen by the instructor. Past classes have featured dry brushing on a variety of animal figures, including owls, eagles, lions, and fish. A “wonky” Christmas tree was selected before the holidays, and a shamrock was chosen for St. Patrick’s Day. Recently a class learned to use a new technique called “drop and fill.” The results are always remarkable, as each artist brings a unique interpretation to the finished piece. All associated class costs are part of the class fee.
Every class encourages creativity and individual expression, but perhaps the greatest reward is the camaraderie found in the studio. Friendships grow as naturally as artistic skills, and laughter is always part of the creative process. Ceramics Club members warmly welcome newcomers. Participants come for the new knowledge and stay for the fun.
