“New Horizon,” 4×5 view camera and motion picture film documenting the gradual
disappearance of the Estrella Mountain views.
Lynn Warren
The June photo of the month is a concerning scene by club member Terry Schmidbauer highlighting changes affecting our Goodyear environment. “Finding Estrella” is an ongoing photographic project documenting the gradual disappearance of the Estrella Mountain views behind the rapid expansion of suburban development in Goodyear. Using a 4x5 view camera and motion picture film, the work traces the quiet tension between the natural desert landscape and the infrastructure steadily overtaking it. In the image “New Horizon,” Estrella Mountain sits low and distant on the horizon, framed by the ordered geometry of suburban streets, walls, and utility structures. The scene feels suspended between open desert and ongoing development, where the mountain remains present, yet increasingly pushed to the margins. The photograph reflects the project’s central idea: preserving these fragile vistas before they quietly disappear.
