Shannon and Riley
Jan Stash
The Pet Companions Club of PebbleCreek is pleased to have Shannon Tyree with Diamond Dogz of Arizona as the guest speaker at our General Membership Meeting on Wednesday, March 4.
Shannon recognized she was losing her hearing at age 30. Every day there is a new awkward situation. For the hearing people reading this, imagine not hearing a blow dryer next to your head. If you use your inside voice, she is not going to hear it. Combined with tinnitus and Meniere’s disease, every day is a long dizzy day of piecing together quiet talkers, those who mumble or fail to enunciate, and reading captions.
Shannon and her dog Riley have been training with and for Diamond Dogz of Arizona since 2019. Diamond Dogz trains dogs for deaf and hard–of–hearing individuals. Riley is a trained service dog that helps Shannon to navigate her world by clueing her in to things she may not hear.
In 2019, Shannon joined the Board of Directors for the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) West Valley Arizona Chapter and is currently vice president. In June of 2025, she was the recipient of HLAA’s National Community Service Award at its annual convention in Indianapolis. In 2022, Shannon joined the Global Alliance for Speech to Text Captioning Board of Directors.
Shannon writes a blog, MyGoldenHears.com, where she explains and demonstrates the training process and the realities of hearing loss. Shannon and her husband, Tom, have been PebbleCreek residents since 2012.
We will meet at 3 p.m. in Room 100 of the Eagle’s Nest Activities Center. All PebbleCreek residents are invited to attend, whether club members or not. There is no charge.
As usual, a box will be provided for such pet donations as: dog beds, pet food (check expiration date), pet collars, leashes, toys, pet medications (check expiration date), etc. Those items not used for our rescues will be donated to other area animal rescue organizations.
