Frank Mixter celebrates his latest hole-in-one

Frank Mixter Makes His Eighth Ace at Eagle’s Nest

Howie Tiger

On Oct. 14, 2025, Frank Mixter made a hole-in-one on the 8th hole at Eagles Nest. This was Frank’s eighth career hole-in-one in his 67th year playing golf. He made it while playing in his regular golf group, the Bandits.

The 8th hole was playing 180 yards from the blue tees to a back right pin-position on the plateau. Frank’s playing partners were Bill Schaffer, Joe Jones, and Roger Johnson. Frank hit his 4-hybrid with a medium trajectory straight at the flagstick. He saw the ball disappear, but neither he, nor his partners saw his ball go in. Frank commented that his group’s eyes are not what they used to be!

As the foursome arrived at the green, they did not see his ball on the green. They presumed it went long or rolled off to the side. They checked behind the green and could not find it. Then, Frank checked the hole and “there it was!” The congrats started.

Frank made his first hole-in-one back in the 1960’s at the Airways Golf Course in Fresno, Calif. Later, he made three more at the Sunset Valley course in Highland Park, Ill. Then two more in the Chicago area. Prior to this Eagles Nest ace, his most recent one was in Albertville, Ala., (Robert Trent Jones Trail) in 1999. So, quite a long time passed.

Frank was born and raised in Clovis, Calif., (near Fresno). He earned his Business degree at San Jose State University where he played college golf all four years on scholarship.

After college he wanted to be in the golf business. Jerry Vroom, his college golf coach, helped Frank in this endeavor. He sent letters on Frank’s behalf to two PGA pro friends, Claude Harmon (1948 Masters Champ) and Chicago legend Bill Ogden (head pro at North Shore CC as well as Bermuda Dunes in Palm Springs). Frank secured an Assistant Professional job with Ogden at both locations and served there for four years.

He then secured the Head Professional job at Bob O’Link Golf Course in Highland Park (originally designed by Donald Ross in 1916), earning his Class A Professional designation. He was the Head Pro there for six years before moving on to Hillcrest CC in Long Grove, Ill., for three more years.

After Hillcrest, Frank traded in the golf business for the product promotion business. He worked for Ha-Lo Industries for 10 years and then Overture Promotions for 24 years before retiring.

Frank and his wife, Cynthia, moved to PebbleCreek in 2022. We hear that Cynthia is quite the competitive ballroom dancer!

Congrats on that eighth ace! Also, Good Luck to Cynthia on her next competition!
