Sewing Machines Buzz with Activity as Snowbirds Return

As the snowbirds make their return, the sewing machines are working at full speed. On Nov. 5, a group of 16 women gathered to sew “Hope Bags” for the New Life Center (NLC).

For many residents of the NLC, escaping their homes often means leaving with little more than their children and the clothes on their backs. These durable tote bags are given to new residents as they arrive. The bags serve as a handy carryall when they visit Hope’s Closet, where they can shop for essential items they need to start their new lives at the center.

On Nov. 19, the sewing club worked on festive Christmas tree fabric designs, perfect for adding a seasonal touch to their homes. These designs can be crafted into wall hangings or pillows, making them a great way to celebrate the holiday season.

Upcoming Events for the Sewing Club

Dec. 3: Class on sewing a zipper into a pillow. The Christmas tree design made in November can be made as a pillow in this class but is not a requirement.

Dec. 17: Class on sewing a cosmetic bag.

In Case You Missed It

October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month was honored by the sewing club with a display of Mastectomy Comfort Pillows. These soft pillows are designed to provide relief after surgery, offering comfort between the breast when using a seatbelt or for compression during coughing or sneezing. The pillows are available year-round at no cost. If you or someone you know could benefit from one, please visit the Expressions Gallery or reach out to Donna Aybar at djaybar@cox.net.
