If you see ducklings in your pool, please call the Pet Companions Club or the patrol office immediately so the ducklings can be rescued and successfully relocated.
A mama mallard duck made a nest and hatched her eggs in a resident’s yard in PebbleCreek. The resident discovered the mama and her 13 adorable ducklings swimming in her pool and contacted the Pet Companions Club for help.
Our resident bird rescuer, Cathy Countryman Cook, along with past-President of the Pet Companions Club, Jim Ellison, went to the resident’s house to rescue these ducks on April 2. The ducklings were netted and carefully placed in a cardboard box. Once all of the babies had been collected, the box was transported to a yard near a golf course pond and released. All of this was done under the watchful eye of the mama mallard, and she promptly reunited with her released babies.
If you find a bunch of ducklings swimming in your pool, we can help. Ducklings like these can be easily and successfully relocated, but time is of the essence! Ducklings do not have all of the oil in their feathers that their parents have. If they stay in your pool too long, their feathers will become saturated, and they will drown. They need to be able to exit the pool, but our pools are usually built where the ducklings cannot hop that high, and they are stuck in the pool. If not rescued quickly, they will die. If you see ducklings in your pool, please call us or the patrol office immediately.
Ducks are migratory birds and protected. Destroying wild duck eggs carries a significant fine. Mama ducks are secretive, protecting their eggs, and you probably will never know that you have a nest until you see the ducklings. If you have had ducklings in your pool in the past, it is likely they will return in subsequent years. They usually prefer yards with a pool, close to a golf course pond.
