Camera Club Photo of the Month

“Balancing Act” by Lynn Warren, an impressive picture of a Toadstool Hoodoo showing great balance on a slim sandstone column; photo was taken with a Canon SX720, ISO 80, F4, 1/200 sec.

The photo of the month for August is an interesting capture by club member Lynn Warren of what is known as a “toadstool” hoodoo, in which the supporting column is Entrada sandstone and the cap is Dakota sandstone; the Entrada is softer and erodes more easily than the Dakota, resulting in a dark top supported by a thinner column which eventually will collapse. The Toadstool Hoodoos are located in Southern Utah in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument just off Highway 89, roughly halfway between Page, Ariz., and Kanab, Utah; this toadstool is performing an impressive balancing act and is an easy 0.5 mile walk from the trailhead. Lynn captured this image with his Canon pocket camera while on a recent hiking trip to the Kanab area under different lighting conditions since, although unusual, skies were overcast (and the group actually experienced a few raindrops before returning to the car).
