Camera Club Photo of the Month

“Weaver’s Needle” by Lynn Warren … a colorful landscape of a Superstition Mountains landmark; photo was taken from the Crosscut Trail on Nov. 18, Canon SX720 pocket camera, ISO 80 (best resolution), F4.0, 1/800 sec.

The photo of the month for April is a striking landscape by club member Lynn Warren featuring Weaver’s Needle, a prominent formation in the Superstition Mountains visible from many areas around the valley. This iconic landmark is named for Pauline Weaver, an 1800’s frontiersman, military scout, prospector, and explorer who was active in the early southwest. The photo demonstrates how one can utilize composition to achieve great results; the trail as well as the “V” of the needle provide leading lines into the picture and the hikers provide a sense of scale since the needle is a massive formation. An interesting tip offered by a recent club presenter: “If you want to take interesting pictures, stand in front of something interesting.” Hopefully this picture qualifies, but a rather challenging hike is required to stand for this close-up view.
