Robert McWhirter, lawyer and Constitutional expert, was the guest at the March meeting of the PebbleCreek Democratic Club. Mr. McWhirter encouraged everyone to learn the Constitution and be familiar with its clauses and amendments. He stressed that we should all be aware that only Congress can create or destroy government agencies and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) does not have the power to fire anyone. Congress makes the laws and the President must follow them. Acts of Congress prevail. He emphasized that the issue of birthright citizenship is defined clearly in the 14th Amendment and there should be no dispute over it.

He specifically addressed the topic of immigration and border crossings, stressing that the numbers of crossings are down and criminal aliens were deported under the Biden administration. Most of those living in the U.S. without documentation have overstayed their visas and did not cross the border illegally. He believes a border wall will not solve the problem. Undocumented immigrants pay money to the government through Social Security contributions and taxes but they are unable to take advantage of any benefits.

Mr. McWhirter encouraged club members to stay firm and united. There is strength in togetherness.

Also in February, the club celebrated Mardi Gras with a dinner and dance; 120 people danced the night away and fancy masks and costumes were in abundance. A great time was had by all.

The PebbleCreek Democratic Club meets on the first Wednesday of the month in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom. The social hour begins at 6 p.m. and the meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. The meetings are open and all are welcome.
