Agua Fria High School District Groundbreaking Ceremony

In an exciting collaboration, West-MEC and Agua Fria High School District recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the upcoming West-MEC Career Academy at Agua Fria High School, opening in the fall of 2025. This event celebrated a partnership aimed at equipping Southwest Valley students with technical education and workforce skills tailored to meet the region’s growing economic needs.

Dr. Scott Spurgeon, Superintendent of West-MEC, and Tom Huffman, Deputy Superintendent of Operations of the Agua Fria High School District, delivered inspiring remarks about the transformative impact the academy will have on the community. Dr. Spurgeon emphasized the importance of addressing the demand for skilled labor in industries such as electrical trades, diesel technology, welding, and HVAC systems. “This academy represents an investment in our students’ futures and our region’s economic sustainability,” Dr. Spurgeon noted.

In attendance were Agua Fria Board Member Sarah Silk and West-MEC Board Members Juan Ramirez, Linda Busam, and Edward Molina. Their presence underscored the collaborative efforts of the involved organizations in making this vision a reality.

This event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of GCON, SPS+ Architects, West-MEC, and Agua Fria High School District. Together, these partners are bringing cutting-edge facilities and training opportunities to the community.

The West-MEC Career Academy will offer programs in four high-demand fields:

* Electrical Trade Specialty: Students will learn to install, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical systems, with pathways toward journeyman licensure.

* Medium/Heavy Diesel Technology: This program trains students to repair and maintain diesel-powered vehicles and equipment for careers in the transportation and construction industries.

* Welding Technology: Students will gain mastery in advanced welding techniques, equipping them for opportunities in construction and artistic metalwork.

* Air Conditioning Technology: With a focus on energy efficiency, students will learn to install and maintain HVAC systems for residential and commercial applications.

The groundbreaking ceremony symbolized not only the start of construction but also the beginning of a brighter future for students and the community. The West-MEC Career Academy represents a strategic investment in education and workforce readiness, ensuring that the Southwest Valley remains a hub for skilled professionals and economic growth.
