PCM9GA’s Welcome Back Snowbirds Tournament

Erv Stein

Our PebbleCreek Men’s Nine-Hole Golf Association (PCM9GA) group was founded way back in 2005 and now with our ever-increasing membership of over 400, we conducted a Welcome Back Snowbirds Scramble Tournament on Nov. 21, utilizing both the front and back nine of our Eagle’s Nest 18-hole course.

The annual seasonal exodus of many of our members reduced our event participation to as low as 45 to 60 players for our torrid summer season, but the return of our departed snowbird players enabled 134 most enthused golfers to tee off at 1:30 p.m. in a Scramble format. The Scramble format scoring is based upon utilizing the best shot of the four team members starting from the initial drive to the final putting stroke. The fall weather conditions were excellent and even with the relative increased challenges of the more difficult Eagles Nest course, (in particular the par 5 holes 1 and 9), the competition was very tight and no more than about 5 to 6 net strokes separated the first place and last place teams. Amazingly enough as it turned out, a total of 5 teams for Flight 1 attained identical first place winning scores of a net 29, which is 7 under par. For the 4th flight, two foursomes finished up with a net 27 which is 9 under par.

A total of 32 foursome teams were divided into 4 flights, and kudos to the winning foursomes as follows:

Flight 1 Winners: 4 teams scored -7 Under Par for a Net 29—Bill Hill, Keith McDonald, Bjarne Kaer, Gary Havens, Scott Biard, Russ Dyson, Bob Brett, Ray Clements, Phillip Lesh, Russ Lowenstein, Anthony Staley, Chris Mucha, Kirby VanNote, Matt Jungles, Eric Letzler

Flight 2 Winners: 1 team scored -8 Under Par for a Net 28—Steve Striker, Richard Bee, Bruce Dice, Ron Froemming

Flight 3 Winners: 1 team scored -8 Under Par for a Net 28—Lenny Leibowitz, Cliff Crooks, Bernie Bangert, Steve Schwartz

Flight 4 Winners: 2 teams scored -9 Under Par for a Net 27—Peter Rollison, Ray Bender, Peter Provenzale, Phillip Stegmann, Dale Klapmeier, Richard Johnson, Ken Laychak, James Stahl

Following the event, most members convened at Sunrise Park with drinks and pizza served and the winning teams were announced and congratulated. As per usual our pairing group did their usual excellent job in setting up this event. Our PCM9GA members look forward to another awesome event schedule in 2025.
