Kudos to Volunteers for Veterans Plaza

In early March of 2024 a request from the Activities Office went out to the community for volunteers to help refurbish the pavers that make up the ‘floor’ of the PebbleCreek Armed Forces Plaza. The intense conditions our hot summers impose on anything outdoors eventually took a toll on these engraved pavers, most of the color on many of the first pavers that had been installed in 2015 had faded so much that it was very hard to read. Something had to be done to save these pavers and the cherished memories of the names and dates shared on each of them. It was estimated that nearly 1,200 pavers would need to be refurbished, an overwhelming notion.

By the second week in March there were five core volunteers, led by HOA staffer Patti Wegehaupt. It was a good start. As each week passed, a few new volunteers would arrive—and the core group was so happy to give them a paint brush and a container of paint! By May, it began to get too hot, but not to be deterred, the group shifted hours and started work at 5 a.m., working until 7 or 8 a.m., until it was too hot to keep going each day—now that is dedication! And further, the work was backbreaking—remember the pavers are on the ground, so people were having to be on their knees, laying on their stomachs, their bottoms, on their side, bending in different directions … painting in all kinds of positions.

Volunteers reported many heartwarming experiences over the months it took to complete this project. Especially significant to them were the wonderful comments shared by various residents as they stopped by the plaza to acknowledge the progress being made each day. The best day came on July 4 when four volunteers determined to meet the goal and painted the last four pavers!  Yes, it was hot, but the desire and determination was there, and they made it happen! On such a patriotic day, the last of the 1,115 pavers identified for this project were finally finished!

The project was very special in so many ways; primarily because it was a way to ensure that honor and respect remains for all of the veterans represented in the plaza. Volunteers shared that this was a wonderful chance for them to express their appreciation and respect for veterans, while also giving back to PebbleCreek. What a wonderful gift these selfless individuals gave!

With that in mind, a hearty thanks to all of the volunteers who gave so much of their time, talent, energy, and sweat. Thank you, all!
