West-MEC Career Academy Opening Fall 2025 at Agua Fria High School

In an exciting partnership, West-MEC and Agua Fria High School District are proud to announce the development of the West-MEC Career Academy at Agua Fria High School, opening in fall of 2025. This collaborative initiative will bring in-demand technical training programs to the Southwest Valley. It will provide students with career and technical education that prepares them for careers in trades critical to the region’s continued growth.

During the development of the Academy, Dr. Scott Spurgeon, Superintendent of West-MEC, stated, “According to industry leaders, as well as labor market analysis, the demand for skilled workers in career pathways like electrical, diesel technology, welding, and air conditioning are expected to grow significantly as the Southwest Valley expands. This requires a skilled workforce, and the West-MEC Career Academy at Agua Fria will be pivotal in meeting this demand through specialized training and industry certifications, enabling students to quickly enter and succeed in these fields after high school.”

The Academy will offer four in-demand programs. Students will have access to industry-standard equipment and cutting-edge facilities right on the Agua Fria High School campus, gaining a competitive advantage in these fields.

The following specialized training will be offered:

Electrical Trade Specialty: Students will learn to install, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical systems, preparing them for roles in residential and commercial wiring with pathways toward a journeyman’s license.

Medium/Heavy Diesel Technology: This program trains students to repair and maintain diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, with hands-on experience in mechanical and electrical systems used in transportation and construction industries.

Welding Technology: Students will master advanced welding techniques to join and fabricate metal products, equipping them to contribute to industries like construction or artistic metalwork.

Air Conditioning Technology: Students will learn to install and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, focusing on energy efficiency and climate control in residential and commercial settings.

Superintendent Mark Yslas states, “The Agua Fria High School District is proud of our partnership with West-MEC to offer essential trades to our students. Providing hands-on workforce development opportunities right in their own community removes transportation and financial barriers, ensuring they receive a quality education and are prepared for the workforce upon graduation.”

The launch of the West-MEC Career Academy represents a strategic investment in the future of both the Southwest Valley’s students and its growing economy, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the region’s workforce needs.
