Unit 18 Celebrates in a Cul-De-Sac Party
John Fox
Late afternoon on Nov. 4, something started to stir in Unit 18. Golf carts appeared, lawn chairs were set up, and tables of food were arranged so we could enjoy the late fall together. Throughout the party, the sounds of laughter, music, and stories of bad drives or putts were heard, but no cars were allowed. Unit 18 sought to rekindle friendships and community dulled over the last two years with concerns of COVID-19.
Our cul-de-sac party became a time to come together, share, celebrate, and welcome new neighbors and snowbirds to join or rejoin their PebbleCreek Unit 18 family.
As the afternoon’s light slid to darkness, we enjoyed a drink or two, a snack, and the warmth of the fire. Most importantly, all of our friends were already there.
Our thanks go out to Tim and Jenny Munson, Beverly Drury, Bobby and Brad Young, and Robbie Fox for setting up and organizing the party. More celebrations to follow for Unit 18!
Unit 20 Happy Hour
Unit 20 met on Nov. 15 for a cul-de-sac happy hour, welcoming back winter neighbors and celebrating fall. We enjoyed beverages, appetizers, and visiting with each other.
Unit 26 Luncheon
Unit 26 enjoyed a holiday luncheon at Claim Jumper.
Unit 34 Residents Recognized
Esther West
On Nov. 2, Bob and Susan Young held their annual party to welcome back snowbirds. Unit residents took that gathering as an opportunity to recognize Bob and thank him for his work for many years as unit contact and the numerous projects he initiates, for which he has been dubbed unit “Mayor.”
Bob received an award engraved with the following message:
“Robert E. Young—Mayor—Unit 34 awarded this representation of his ever burning interest in promoting community spirit.”
Susan was presented a bouquet of yellow roses in recognition of her role in supporting her husband’s activities. In addition, both Bob and Susan were presented with monogrammed tall beverage glasses, to sustain them through the many social gatherings here in the unit.
Unit 40 Welcome Back Party
DeeDee Fast
On Nov. 12, 42 neighbors of Unit 40 met at the home of Bill Schroeder and Kayleen Herrema. Residents brought appetizers with the social committee providing dessert. Since we have many new neighbors, we included the date we moved to our current homes and where we moved from on our name tags as a conversation starter. A great time was had by all, and we are looking forward to more activities in the coming months.
Unit 42B Breakfast
Tom Bose
Nov. 12 was a cool morning, but the neighbors in Unit 42B warmed everyone up with a breakfast at Oasis Pool. There was plenty of warm food, including Jennifer Betts’s made-on-the-spot blueberry pancakes. Everyone left full and happy to have a chance to meet again as a group. Many more of these unit gatherings to come in the future.
Unit 44 Chili Cook-off—Voter Recount?!
Spike Razem
As temperatures drop and days become shorter, conditions are perfect for a warm bowl of homemade chili.
On Nov. 7, Unit 44 residents participated in an exciting, highly-contested Chili Cook-off at the Oasis Pool. Six crock pots filled with different recipes of delicious chili were competing for BIG, HUGE prizes.
Deb and Paul Fahey did a great job organizing this fun event, which included 28 neighbors who brought various related toppings/side dishes (i.e., cheese, onions, sour cream, Fritos, cornbread, etc.).
There was a tasting round, then everyone filled their bowls, then there was voting for the coveted Grand Prize. Ballots were tabulated and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes were awarded. But wait! There was a demand (kiddingly) for a recount.
Walking away with the TOP/BIG/HUGE prize was Donna and Wayne Thomas. 2nd place to Faheys, and 3rd to (tie) Clarks and Razems. When asked for the secret magic to their winning chili, Donna said, “Years of cooking it; no measurements; fire-roasted tomatoes; and, two days of simmering.” Husband Wayne said, “Definitely it was the stirring and tasting.”
Unit 44 continues to plan fun events during the holiday season, which included a Friendsgiving Turkey Dinner Party (Crabtrees/Gorskis) and the Christmas-Decorated Golf Cart Caravan hosted by Judy and Jack Campbell.
Let’s keep the good times rolling! Happy New Year to all from Unit 44!
Can They Do It Again?
Robin Macik
The “Wii R 49A” (that stands for Unit 49A) captured the Twi-Light Wii Champions last winter season. Can they do it again? We shall see.

Robin Macik
On Nov. 30, 55 residents from Unit 49A gathered together in the Chianti Room to start off the holiday season. The evening started with appetizers in the Portofino Bar and then moved into the Chianti Room for a wonderful dinner. Thank you to Gretchen Bataille, who chaired the event with help from the social committee that consists of: Robin Thomas, Barb Busker, DeDe Harrington, Robin Macik, Merrily Rhiel, Brenda Sand, and Diana DeCanio.
A special thank you to Judy and Tim DeGeorge for donating the beautiful centerpieces that Judy made and were won by a person at each table, and also to Nancy and Larry Burnson for donating a gift bag of chocolates for each person that attended.
Unit 51 Pajama and Book Fundraiser
Janet Miazga
November and December brought the busy holiday season, and that includes our annual Unit 51 pajama/book fundraiser, handled once again so kindly by Sue Borgstrom and Karen Bush! We have all been very generous for this fundraiser every year so far. The Pajama Program is a nationwide organization that provides new pajamas and books to children arriving in foster care, giving them a secure and nurturing bedtime environment. Pajamas are needed for children from 2 years old to teenagers, and many of you included a suitable book for that age, which was a precious extra and greatly appreciated. Our Unit 51 residents donated 73 pajamas and 54 books this year—thank you so much!
Unit 51 Holiday Party
Janet Miazga
‘Twas the season to have our annual Unit 51 holiday party, this year on Dec. 3. Though a smaller gathering than prior years, the 36 guests enjoyed a fun evening. Appetizers and cocktails were served in the nicely decorated entry hall before entering the ballroom for dinner, which was delicious and served by a very cordial staff. The lovely, sparkling centerpieces were designed by Bevy Hogan, while our social committee—Carol Adkins, Faye Sessoms, and Sandee Matteucci—helped with decorating and cleanup. DJ Jim Allen provided soft music for dining, followed by a great variety of dance songs. The 50/50 raffle was won by Linda and Tom Schmidt. A wonderful evening was had by all!
Unit 53 Cookie Party
Sandy Stephens
Sandy Stephens hosted her 5th Annual Cookie Party on Dec. 9 for the Unit 53 gals, and the resident Elf was here to greet them. There was spiced apple cider, Kirkland egg nog … so good if you haven’t tried it … wine, champagne, and an array of homemade cookies from her favorite recipes. It was wonderful to have the gals enjoying each other’s company and feeling more comfortable now that COVID-19 has lessened.
Unit 54 Bakes Cookies for Luke AFB
Barb Dunson
What has become an annual tradition in Unit 54 is the baking and sharing of baked and bought cookies for our Luke Air Force Base service people. Taking time from busy schedules to purchase ingredients and then bake is a statement to how we feel about our service men and women having a bit of Christmas when they may be away from family traditions. Our amazing bakers are: Patty Klepinger (spritz), Kay Stone (Reese’s Cup), Michelle and Ron Devine (white chocolate cranberry macadamia), Cheryl Kunkle (chocolate chip), Judy Kettlewell (peanut butter), Nancy Popenhagen and Beth Kelly (frosted sugar, ginger bread, sugar), and Julie Kemper and Barb Dunson (peanut butter blossoms). Thank you everyone for your participation.

Unit 60 had 15 decorated golf carts in the PebbleCreek Golf Cart Parade. Santa, Arnold Hickey, led our parade! Much fun was enjoyed by all, including viewers on the route who received candy thrown from the carts!
Unit 61 Holiday Dinner Party
Adrianne Beck
Unit 61 residents enjoyed a festive holiday dinner party on Dec. 3 in the Chianti Room. Everyone enjoyed the delightful sounds of Sydney Zack on the keyboard, especially as Kris Gillum led us all in a rousing holiday sing-along. A great time was had by all.
Unit 62A November Happy Hour
Toni Erickson
Julie and Elmer Greenbank led off the season with hosting the first fall happy hour by entertaining Unit 62A neighbors in their beautiful home and backyard on Nov. 22. Arizona’s Mother Nature allowed for all to gather outside in the Greenbank’s warm and inviting atmosphere. All neighbors brought an appetizer or dessert to share along with their beverage of choice for the evening. It allowed full-timers a chance to reminisce about the summer heat and remind the snowbirds of what they missed this past summer as well as what to look forward to this upcoming winter! A few of the guys—Bruce Banks, John Geraghty, Rick Langhals, Steve Gonzales, Gerry Hibbard, Tom MacKenzie, and Jim Downey—gathered under the umbrella to enjoy the sunset, coupled with their favorite beverage and discussed their latest golf scores in addition to other important issues! The rest of the gang (30+ neighbors) chatted about all the activities that went on in November, which included the bimonthly mahjongg and Ladies Golf, Men’s breakfast, Ladies Lunch, Samba, and the Hand, Knee, and Foot Mondays!
Unit 62A Ornament Exchange and Ladies’ Luncheon
Toni Erickson
Our annual ornament exchange and holiday ladies’ luncheon was held outside on the patio at the lovely Hermosa Inn located in Paradise Valley. We kicked off the holidays early on Dec. 1 with this event arranged by our hard-working activities committee. Everyone brought a wrapped ornament valued between $10-$20. Following a wonderful lunch, each lady selected a gift and then had a new Christmas ornament to return home with. Nineteen 62A ladies attended.
Unit 62B Holiday Luncheon
Judy Freidman
The ladies of Unit 62B enjoyed our holiday luncheon in the beautifully decorated Chianti Room. To mix up the seating arrangements, each of us chose a Christmas ornament to determine our tables and were able to meet new neighbors. We were honored to have PebbleCreek singers Key of She entertain us with original holiday songs with a sing-along for the finale. We had a surprise visit from Santa Claus with his bag of goodies. A good time was had by all!
Unit 62B Ladies 9-Hole Scramble
Unit 62B held its ladies golf scramble on Nov. 11, Veterans Day, at Tuscany West Golf Course. Lynn King and Bev Pliska were hosts. Our participants wore red, white, and blue to honor this special day and the sacrifices made. Thanks to all our 62B Let It Be ladies who participated for fun and prizes. We welcome all 62B lady golfers “who just wanna have fun” to join us in 2023.
A very big thanks to our donors for some really great giveaways. We are very appreciative of Van’s Golf Shop, Tailgaters, Haymaker, Barro’s Pizza, Old Chicago, Red Robin, Roman’s Oasis, and, of course, our PebbleCreek golf department.
