Kathy Bates
David Freed, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and the nephew of PebbleCreek resident Kathy Bates, will be appearing locally at a book signing for Voodoo Ridge, the latest installment in his Cordell Logan mystery series, on Saturday, December 27 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Poison Pen Bookstore in Scottsdale.
Freed will be staying with his aunt in PebbleCreek during his book signing tour in the Phoenix area. Aunt Kathy, who plans to donate a copy of her nephew’s book to the library at Eagle’s Nest Clubhouse, is excited to have her friends and neighbors in PebbleCreek meet her famous relative while he is in the area and hopes many of them will attend his book signing event for Voodoo Ridge. The earlier releases in the mystery series are Fangs Out and Flat Spin.
Freed was a specialist in both law enforcement and military affairs during his 18 year reporting career. As an investigative reporter for the Los Angeles Times he shared in a Pulitzer Prize for the newspaper’s coverage of the 1992 L.A. riots and was an individual finalist for the Pulitzer Prize’s Gold Medal for Public Service, the highest award in American Journalism.
His expose, The Wrong Man, published in The Atlantic, detailing how the FBI pursued this wrong suspect in a string of anthrax murders following June 2011 was shortlisted as a 2011 finalist in Feature Writing by the American Society of Magazine Writers.
In 1995 he sold his first feature length screenplay, the action thriller Stealth, to Twentieth Century Fox.
