On Nov. 3, the Breast Cancer Discussion Group held a potluck dinner at the Oasis Pool in celebration of 25 years since it was founded. The weather was perfect, and new and past members were ready to party. Some members were diagnosed as far back as 1995, and there were those who were just newly diagnosed. Husbands were also included, as they have been wonderful and caring supporters along our cancer journey.
Rayma Scalzo, founder; Dr. Rich Shildt, retired oncologist; and Kitty Shildt, registered dietician, were the honorees of the day. Rayma had a few words to say, which included the following: “I have met so many inspirational people during the past 25 years of being President and Facilitator of this great group of ladies. The gratification I’ve gotten through this group, and helping you, has been such a blessing. Breast Cancer has truly changed my life.” She thanked Dr. Shildt for attending the monthly meetings and for his willingness to be helpful to members whenever they had questions, even when he was out of town. Rayma also thanked Kitty, who made many nutrition presentations that have been so important for healing and living a healthy lifestyle. We are so fortunate to have them both available to us throughout the years.
Last but not least, Rayma thanked Judy Ayers for her willingness to continue the group as the president and facilitator. As Rayma said, “It is time to move on, but I’ll always be here for you.”
Because of the Christmas holiday, our monthly meeting time has been moved up to Thursday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. If you would like information about our meetings, contact Judy Ayers at 623-536-1496.
