Once again, PebbleCreek (PC) won Low Gross in the 2022-23 Roadrunner Women’s Golf League! The last league win came in the 2020-21 season.
The PC Roadrunner Team had 17 players on its roster: Brenda Cook, Laura Drummond, Ellen Enright, Sharon Hadley (Co-Captain,) Mary Harris, Kathy Hubert-Wyss, Suzanne Kanaly, Monica Lee, Barbara McKinney, Liz Mitchell, Linda Nathan, Marilyn Reynolds, Amber Rivera, Sheri Sears, Susan Slaughter (Co-Captain), Cindy Sota, and Katherine Tatro. The players with the lowest handicaps and availability comprised the team each competition.
The Roadrunner League is comprised of eight golf clubs. Each club sends four two-women teams to play Best Ball. The League counts the Best Ball scores from the four two-women teams for each of the eight matches during the season. The team with the lowest cumulative score wins the title.
The first match was on Nov. 21 at Red Mountain Ranch. The course was very difficult but it was in good shape. The PC team finished 3rd Gross and 3rd Net.
On Dec. 5, the second match was played at Eagle’s Nest. The team kicked it into high gear and took advantage of playing on its home course. Thanks to the stellar play from Sharon Hadley, Susan Slaughter, Laura Drummond, Monica Lee, Ellen Enright, Liz Mitchell, Sheri Sears, and Mary Harris, PebbleCreek finished minus 10 strokes over all of the other teams to finish 1st Gross.
The third match was played on Dec. 12 at the Ranch course at Tonto Verde. It had poured the previous night, so it was cart path only and cold. The team persevered and remained in 1st Gross overall.
The fourth match was on Jan. 9 at the Anthem Ironwood course. The team increased its Gross overall lead by one.
On Jan. 16, the fifth match was held at Briarwood Country Club. It was a cold and rainy day, but with good results, as the Gross points increased from 11 to 14!
February 6 was the anticipated Cochise course at Desert Mountain. With its spectacular views, including a beautiful bobcat sighting, the team battled the weather again. The overall Gross lead was now six strokes with two matches remaining.
The seventh match was played on Feb. 20 at the beautiful Blackstone Country Club. It was a successful day, and the team increased its Gross lead to eight.
On Feb. 27, the eighth and final match of the season was held at the renowned Prospector course at Superstition Mountain in Gold Canyon. The weather was perfect, the golf course was stunning, and the PC team played its best of the season! The team secured the championship by 16 strokes!
A special thanks to Co-Captains Sharon Hadley and Susan Slaughter for their two-year commitment and dedication to the Roadrunner Team. The torch has now been passed to the incoming Co-Captains, Sheri Sears and Liz Mitchell, for the 2023-24 season.
