Love, Loss and What I Wore comes to PebbleCreek

Carrie Mataraza

We are what we wear, to coin a phrase, especially if we are women! Love, Loss and What I Wore, written by sisters Nora and Delia Ephron, takes us into the lives of five women where wardrobe becomes a time capsule of each of their lives. Based on the book by Ilene Beckerman, their stories are easily identifiable to all women who’ll surely recognize themselves within the tales of growing pains, friendships, loves, disasters and successes. Five members of the PebbleCreek Roving Readers portray the women’s stories in monologue with humor and pathos. You’ll surely laugh and maybe you’ll even tear up at times, too.

It is no wonder that this show, originally performed off-Broadway in 2009 at the Westside Theatre in New York, has been an ongoing theatrical success and continues its run as the second longest running show in the theater’s history.

A benefit for the Build the Backstage Campaign, The PebbleCreek Production will provide tea and cakes to an intimate audience of only 150 persons and will be staged in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom the afternoon of October 29. Ticket sales information will be announced in this paper and on the PebbleCreek egroup. But do not hesitate to get your ticket because seating is limited and this show is certain to sell out quickly.

Calling all “Laugh In” lovers

Laurie Farquhar

Take your favorite characters from Laugh In, combine rock ‘n roll, Broadway and country songs, mix in some tap and jazz dancing and finally, add a touch of up-tempo Latin music and what do you get? A spectacular evening of entertainment called A Night at the Renaissance and it promises to sock it to you!

A Night at the Renaissance is an unprecedented collaboration by ShowTime, PC Players, PC Singers and PC Musicians to raise some of the money needed to fund the Build the Backstage project. This project will expand the backstage area of the Renaissance Theatre making it safer and more functional for everyone who uses the theatre.

To produce a variety show of this scope requires many people and a lot of teamwork, both on stage and behind the scenes. The production crew is already hard at work writing scripts and building sets but performers are still needed for some of the comedy routines. Auditions for these roles will be held Monday, August 17 and Tuesday, August 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Renaissance Theatre. The tryouts will include cold readings from the script and no appointment is necessary.

For those who were unable to attend the vocal auditions on July 27 and 28, it is still possible to try out for a singing part. The directors are trying to be as flexible as possible with so many people away on summer travels. You can arrange for a singing audition appointment by contacting Patti Wegehaupt at [email protected].

A Night at the Renaissance will run six nights from Monday, November 16 to Saturday, November 21. The auditions are open to everyone in PebbleCreek. If you have questions about them or the variety show, please contact either Producer Kathy Mitchell at [email protected], ShowTime Director Chanca Morrell at [email protected] or PC Players Director Laurie Farquhar at [email protected].

PC Singers rehearsals resume

Donna Swagger

While most PebbleCreekers are focusing on high temperatures, monsoons and haboobs, the PebbleCreek Singers are turning their thoughts toward December! What better way to feel some relief from those sizzling temperatures outside than to head to the air conditioned Renaissance Theatre and sing songs about snow, sleigh rides and other wintry things! The Singers’ first rehearsal for the ever popular Christmas concert is scheduled for Monday, August 10 at 2:30 p.m. in the theatre.

Director Gail Kennedy has been working on the program since May listening to countless possibilities before making her final selection and ordering the music. She met with Section Leaders in July to preview the music, noting the challenging rhythms, timing, enunciation and dynamics for each octavo. Rehearsal CD’s and music packets have been prepared for distribution at the first rehearsal. Everything will be organized and ready by August 10 when the choristers reconvene to receive and hear the new music. After three months of R and R, the choristers will be fired up and set to face the challenge of four months of twice weekly full chorus and section rehearsals. The goal: to learn and perfect each song to ensure their finest concert to date! The Singers’ reputation for first rate performances has become their distinctive trademark and they will go above and beyond to maintain that status!

Director Kennedy has designed a dynamic and diverse program that encompasses a wide variety of musical tastes. The concert features an assortment of secular, novelty, classical and sacred numbers that promise to be crowd pleasers. Performance dates are Tuesday, December 1 through Sunday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Renaissance Theatre. It’s not too early to put these dates on your calendar!
