This year, Flag Day may not have been recognized by everyone (including the Google website and The Arizona Republic newspaper which, sadly, did not carry even one mention), but here in PebbleCreek our residents were celebrated for their patriotism and respect for the flag with a special ceremony and awarding of certificates.
Local chapters of the Sons of the Revolution (SAR) and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) presented the PebbleCreek Homeowners Association with certificates of award for the “proper use, correct display and patriotic presentation of the flag of the United States of America.”
“This is not a certificate to be taken lightly,” noted DAR Regent (and PebbleCreek resident) Flora Conley. “There is a lot to know about flag protocol and procedure. Just look it up on the internet and you’ll find there are a great many laws and regulations which are not always easy to follow, nor, in fact, always followed. Members of our DAR Chapter, along with the local SAR Chapter, have always been impressed with the spirit of patriotism in PebbleCreek and the proper observation of flag protocol at their many events.”
SAR State VP and Flag Chairman, Steven Monez, spoke about this history of the American flag, noting it was “born” on June 14, 1777 after the Continental Congress adopted this resolution: “That the Flag of the United States be 13 stripes alternate red and white, that the Union be 13 stars white in a blue field representing a new constellation.” Additional stars have been added 27 times between 1777 and 1960. Monez also noted that it was in 1916 that President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day.
Accepting the certificates on behalf of PebbleCreek homeowners, HOA President, John Kiekbusch, thanked the SAR and DAR chapters for all they contribute to our community and noted that we will display awards with great pride.
