Nothing like a customized hand-made rug by Grandma

Granddaughter’s rug, Grab Bag, hooked by Priscilla Sharp

Several years ago Priscilla made a commitment to hook a rug for each of her nine grandchildren to give to them as a high school graduation present. This rug was the third of a total of nine and was presented to granddaughter Madeline who resides in Indiana. The design is a Pearl McGown that Priscilla admits having for several years. While most of the motifs were preset in the original design, half of the rug was customized to reflect Madeline’s interests and personality. If you look carefully you can see the states in which most family members reside: birds, bugs and watermelon that reflect this granddaughter’s love of the outdoors and jack-o-lanterns because this family embraces Halloween. The smiling faces depict the cheerful personality that the new rug owner has.

Grandma describes some frustration with this work but, overall, enjoyment in hooking it and pleasure with the final product. It was started in the summer of 2015 and worked on intermittently until the winter of 2016. Concern of running out of the background wool color that was custom dyed was a major concern and so overwhelming that Priscilla put it in a bag and kept it out of sight for a while. One day she happened to come across additional material that was a perfect match. Subsequently the rug emerged and was worked on continuously since April of this year. If all the hours were totaled, it probably took a solid four months to complete.

With six rugs to go, three of which will need to be completed at the same time for triplet granddaughters, Priscilla has her work cut out for her! Wonder how she will have time or energy to work on much else over the next couple of years!

The Rug Hookers meet every Monday afternoon from noon to 4:00 p.m. in the Diamondback Room of the Creative Arts Center. Feel free to drop by and observe for yourself the unique and colorful designs that develop during these sessions.
