Dementia holiday survival skills

Teri Sellers

The next meeting of the Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group is December 15.

Christmas and New Years are very festive holidays, full of family, laughter, food and cheer. When your loved one has Alzheimer’s or dementia, that changes. But that doesn’t have to mean that you ignore the festivities or forget to laugh and enjoy the specialness that these holidays bring.

This month, our support group meeting will be different and very special. If you were around last year, you know that I took the ‘stage’ and provided a stand-up comedy routine. Laughter is by far the best medicine and we did share more than a few good laughs. Sylvia and I are planning a very special morning that will include some special holiday treats and a program on how to make the most of this time of year. There is so much you can do for yourself and your loved one to make this Christmas special and we want to share that with you. Also, I won’t be able to resist another attempt at stand-up comedy and we will be bringing some Christmas munchies. So, December sounds like a meeting you will not want to miss.

Respite Care

We may be able to provide free respite care for those with Alzheimer’s/Dementia during the caregiver meeting. This will allow the caregiver the opportunity and peace of mind to attend the discussion group. Please call me with your RSVP no later than Tuesday, December 11.

Monthly Breakfast

A more casual opportunity to meet and share with other caregivers is the first Saturday of each month. We will meet at Eagle’s Nest for breakfast and just talk. Getting to know other caregivers can be very supportive and helpful as the journey of this disease can be challenging. RSVP is required by November 28 for the December 1 breakfast.

For information or to RSVP for respite care or the breakfast, please call Teri Sellers at 602-793-0299 or email [email protected].
