All hooking and no games makes less fun

Even though the rug hookers enjoy their craft so much they do not think of it as work, a little diversion never hurts. For the second year in a row club members were invited to participate in a game of chance. Each member brought in three unwrapped strips of wool of a predetermined size. The only other items needed to participate were three die. If an L was rolled, the hooker had to forfeit a swatch of cloth to the individual on her left. If an R was rolled, the hooker on her immediate right chose which fabric piece she wanted to add to her stash. If a C was rolled, the cloth remnant needed to be placed in the center of the table.

Once all three pieces of wool were forfeited, the hooker was disqualified from playing unless the member to her right or left rolled a die that provided her with the means to continue playing.

The game lasted over 25 minutes with over 20 individuals beginning. Lots of laughing, cajoling, and superstitious gambling adages were heard including, “Baby needs a new pair of shoes!” After numerous changing of hands the final winner of the coveted stash of wool was Monika Jones. The irony was that she, of all members of our club, is least in need of any additional fabric. Monika, after all, is the individual who dyes and sells wool to most of our membership! It is going to be interesting how she decides to utilize these pieces of fabric. If you are the gambling type, you can bet that some of that cloth will end up at next year’s wool swap.

Even though the size of the group is diminished during the summer months, the Rug Hookers meet every Monday afternoon from noon to 4:00 p.m. in the Fiber Arts Room in the Creative Arts Center.
