Funds collected for polio eradication by Rotary Club

Lou Ann Ashburn of the Rotary Club of Goodyear PebbleCreek collected donations for polio eradication at the recent PebbleCreek Health and Wellness Fair.

Rotary International for over 30 years has mounted a tireless effort to eradicate the polio disease around the world. On World Polio Eradication Day, October 24, the local Rotary Club of Goodyear PebbleCreek raised $850 from club members and PebbleCreek neighbors and friends to donate to this important cause.

“Under the leadership of Rotary International, in collaboration with public health agencies in the developing world, the polio disease is nearly eliminated as a human health threat,” said Joan Smith, local Rotary Club president. “The international public health community confirms that just 22 cases of polio still linger in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The last cases are the hardest to eliminate but Rotary has made the commitment to continue its efforts until the world is polio free,” noted Smith.

The Rotary Club of Goodyear PebbleCreek, chartered in 2017, has 30 members committed to “service above self” focused on addressing community, youth, international and vocational needs.

The Club meets every Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. in the Chianti Room of the PebbleCreek Tuscany Falls Clubhouse. For further information, contact Joan Smith, club president, at 503-348-9468 or [email protected].
